Windscreen Replacement- Autoglass Bad Service

Had to have my front windscreen replaced today after a stone chip cracked it Evil or Very Mad

Did all the normal, checked excess, approved repairer and booked it in yesterday to have it installed, 2 hours job at there branch as i didn't have any undercover work area for them.

Dropped car off, went away and came back about 1:40mins later, asked to inspect the car before i signed off on it and they had done a clean job with little cleaning up to be done, and no dents or paintwork scratches like the last time i had a screen replaced.

Great i thought Confused ... paid the excess and went out to my car which they had removed outside for me to drive home

Then..... I adjusted the rear view mirror for it to nearly drop off in my hand, I noticed it wasn't clip together at all

I went and asked one of the lads in the workshop to see if he could fix it, he attempted it for 5 seconds, said it wasn't him who had done it, and went off came back and said i had to see the office staff

Who proceeded to say they had to order me a genuine LR windscreen (like i originally wanted) as the chap had been trying to fix the mirror for the last half hour and they will be in contact when it comes in.

I ask why they had not told me that this was the case, as i had been waiting for the car for 20 mins in their office, with the office checking on its progress when i turned up to collect

He gave a laim excuse about it not been filter through to him in the office:roll:

Personally I think they thought i would not notice a rear view mirror that rain sensor casing has a 5mm gap, a mirror that you can lift away from the screen, and a mirror that vibrates when you drive Shocked

Now bear in mind they told me the only different between their screen and a OEM LR screen is the LR Badge isn't stamped on it.

Well that was another lie as my screen was made by Pilkington, and theirs is made by solorflare or something Neutral

AUTOGLASS there are a joke in my opinion Rolling Eyes and tomorrow they are going to have a complaint to deal with Exclamation Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Like CG said earlier, all firms make mistakes HOPEFULLY not often BUT.....

It's how they deal with the customer when a mistake is made and their attempt to rectify the fault.

I'm afraid this 'ignore it and hope the customer won't notice/won't have the balls to bring it back' mentality is all too common in my experience.

The commitment of Autoglass is to give the customer 100 % warrenty which means if you're not happy with the glass, they should replace it.
This is no quality assurance but an attempt to make fast profits as they assume most people won't (dare to ? ) complain. Quality assurance is to make sure that the job is right at the first go.

Extract from their "Glass Quality Statement":
We inspect every single piece of glass before we fit it.

So a suchlike deviation should be noticed before fitment.

it's not so much the fact the mirror didn't fit, to what i presume is a embedded bracket in the glass, things like that obviously occasionally happen, but when your talking windscreens it really shouldn't Confused

its the fact they blatantly tried to get away with it, They had plenty of chance to inform me of the problem, even taking me out to inspect the fitments prior to signing and paying for it.

and he little quip, they have to try and get a OEM from LR without passing on the cost Rolling Eyes

Glad i didn't go down the line of going to the dealer and having them fit it, then reclaiming the cost via my insurance, the total bill was £1100, according to my paperwork AG gave me Shocked Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I've had excellent service from Autoglass the only time I've had to deal with them.

Local chav late at night pried out the rear door quarterlight (? - the triangular one that doesn't wind up and down) on my previous FL1 in an attempt to nick the satnav that wasn't in the car, though the mount was still stuck to the windscreen. The alarm went off, and he scarpered when I went outside. I didn't see anything wrong on the car until the next day, late afternoon on a Saturday, when I found the window lying on the pavement. Still in one piece, luckily. I phoned the glass hotline for my insurance, who put me onto AG. The local centre didn't have the trim pieces in stock that the chav had damaged pulling the window out but the engineer managed to get it back in place, and didn't charge me anything. It was about 10pm by then, so I was happy to just have the car rainproof.

It cost me over £500 in panel repairs (chav had first had a go at prying the drivers door from the top with a screwdriver, leaving a dent in the roofline) , new trim and panel resprays at the local garage though. The repairs were done to perfection, totally invisible when they'd finished, but it did teach me to not leave the satnav mount in the car - and to wipe off the marks on the windscreen from the sucker.

very similar experiance in a FL1 loan car whilst my Kia was getting a new dashboard for 6 months

Chav, saw my old satnav bracket stuck on the window, shoved screwdriver into the glass guides and shattered the passenger window, alarm went off and he scarped , with me in my socks in hot (but painfull) persuit

Took it to autoglass, for a replacement, which i had to pay for (drive assist loan cars don't cover glass or tires Rolling Eyes )

Got them to put in replacement glass, which rattled all the time even when closed, then they arranged to replace it with OEM LR glass and they was a perfect fit.

Funnily enough this was supposed to be a like for like piece of glass made by the same people that the only difference was the LR stamp wasn't on it. Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Had the same experience as Npinks today. Had to have a new screen fitted due to a stone chip. Autoglass fitted it but when trying to refit the rear view mirror it kept falling off. They have rebooked the car in for Friday to fit another screen but Im sure that they will have the same problem if they try and fit the same make of screen. The screen fittet is not a genuine LR product by pilkington but some company called Solarflare.
Has anybody any suggestions?
Npinks what was the outcome of your experience?

When I got my front screen chipped last year the local Autoglass made a huge issue out of asking if it was a heated screen and did it have rain sensor etc (all RRS's have both as standard equipment, even the S version), I waited 2 days for them to get in a genuine LR screen........................................ and then they asked how old is the car? WHAT?
Seems that with RRS and Disco3 the front screen is very difficult to replace without damage to to the car due to the way it's boneded into the structure, so if Autoglass can repair the screen insitu they prefer that (it's cheaper on the insurance as well!). If the car is less than 2 years old they try to do the repair. They said it would be "invisible" so I went ahead, my only concern being that the heater element would still work. Well, the repair is OK but it aint "invisible" as CHPR picked it up straight away when the car was in being serviced and I hadn't told them about it. Anyway I have a small pimple like defect in the glass now just below my line of vision, I don't notice it and the heated screen works just fine on frosty mornings, I'll get it replaced just before I sell the car and somebody else can have the problems of the leaks/squeaks and damage! How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

Spoke to Autoglass today and told them of Nigels similar experience. They said that they will try another Solarflare screen tomorrow and if this doesnt work, which I am certain it wont, they will order a LR screen.
They started talkin about a faulty batch of solarflare screens LOL Rolling with laughter

If you are insured with Land Rover Insurance then a swift call to them would be helpful - the policy says that "only genuine Land Rovers parts will be used to make any repair" How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

i would insist on the LR screen straight away

bearing in mind they cut the screens out, which possibly could leave the paint scratched down to the bear metal which if not properly sealed could lead to rust

Following my phone call to them yesterday quoting Nigels experience, Autoglass didnt even come today to try and fit another Non LR screen. Had a phone call off them saying that the replacement screen was also faulty so they were contacting a LR dealer to obtain a genuine LR screen. Oh to the power of the forum Thumbs Up
