Brand new 5 available all with punctures???

whats every bodies thoughts on part worns
not a problem,as long as they are repaired correctly,I bought two similar tyres for my disco although they had already been repaired.

I called into my local tyre specialist who explained that for the type of damage on the new tyres a specialist repairer is required Its not a punture repair as such but a hole is cut and a new piece is welded into place, this is all covered under a British Standard and the repair is as good as a new tyre and has to be able to last the life of that tyre

As said not a problem all tyres will have a puncture that is well within the repairable part of the tyre and I was told they came from the car factory and the punctures are caused by rivets or screws that have been left on the floor from production and of course being a new car cannot have any puncture repairs, enjoy your savings,I have! I feel a bit conflicted here - logically I would say never buy secondhand tyres as you have no idea of their history. That said, I have bought and sold wheels with tyres on this forum. I suppose that although we don't actually know the people on the forum you get some idea of their honesty from the way they post? Neutral
I recently bought a set of wheels on e-bay, and although the tyres are only down to 5mm the wear pattern is slightly odd (poor tracking I think) and I won't trust them for the sort of long distance driving I tend to do. I'll drive a few miles on them to check there are no problems with the wheels, then I'll put new winter tyres on the wheels, which is why I bought them. However I am quite happy to keep a secondhand wheel and tyre as emergency spare, since I know I will only use it in emergency and will drive accordingly. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

When there's money to be saved by buying used stuff of unknown quality, people often love a story to go with it to convince themselves it's a bargain and, as stories go, that a great one! Laughing

PS: Have you visited many modern car production lines? Wheels and tyres are one of the very last things to go on to the car during final assembly and they don't even touch the ground until the last moment; even then, the floor is incredibly clear of any form of waste. That's based on first hand observation when visiting production lines, sometimes many times, at Plant Oxford/Cowley (BMW MINI & even Rover before them), Castle Bromwich (Jaguar), Halewood (Land Rover), Triumph (Hinckley) and even Morgan!

Here's an example of the sort of cradle that a car is carried in, even just after the wheels and tyres have just been fitted, still holding the car off the ground and at a good, safe, working height. Check how clean and tidy that the floor is.

I did not say I believed the story however the tyres I bought are new but each had a puncture repair near the centre of the tread and had them checked and fitted by a local branch of ats,as said you pay your money and take your choice,I have never had a problem with a properly repaired tyre and at getting on for £200 a time would never throw away a good tyre.

So if anyone wants four standard 18" Pirelli tyres with around 5mm on them and NO history, let me know. I'll be changing them around September time! (Came off two different Ewoks, via a dealer in NI>) Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Yep totally agree with Mudslinger

Tyres are the only thing between you and the road. Part worns you have no idea what they have come off ! possible a vehicle that's been in serious accident and bounced off kerbs causing structural damage.

Once I drove 160 miles to purchase 4 tyres of a particular make etc, once they were fitted and car rolled out the workshop realized the tyres were for the American market not the UK. Apparently they buy tyres by the container load cheap and that's how they do them at the price .
They wouldn't refund or change them back!
Very expensive lesson as I then had to go out and buy a proper set of tyres ! Jaguar x-type sport gone

i did the same as you oldgeezer on my first 4x4

Bought 2 brand new continental as they were discounted to ridiculously low price, got home and a couple of days later noticed the side walls were cracking all round on both of them.

Went back to the garage who were very helpful and agreed it wasn't right but couldn't offer any other tyres at the same price. They did fit 2 new ones of another make at a discounted price and sent the Continental back to the UK Head office for inspection. Report came back about a month later saying that although the tyres were kite marked etc they were intended for the South African market and so were a different compound to UK tyres. I got a refund for them without any further hassle.

Well done, at least you got a refund.
My problem was back in the days of exchange & Mart and a back street garage which I had no idea until I arrived.
I have now actually remembered the make of tyres, they were Good year Eagle NCTs for a Carlton GSI 24v.

The frustration like you was the fact that the tyres were exactly the same brand and model etc and size but just totally the wrong tread ( looked like a cross ply ) and designed really for different surface and conditions.
I have to say they were awful to drive on.
I seem to remember they cost about £80.00 each where as the genuine were about £120 each so back in the early 90's it was a substantial saving, but as we have said before you don't get something for nothing.
I just worry about all those people who know nothing technically and just accept whats fitted. Jaguar x-type sport gone

Carlton GSI 24V... now there was a beast of a motor (although not as much a beast as the Lotus version)

thank you
Yes it was a beast. Purchased as an demo and kept it 7 years. I have to say best car of all times in 45 years plus of motoring.
My favourite times were in various parts of Europe with it. In its day there was very little to compete with it although a few XR3i drivers did try but I have to say in my younger days once the old girl reached 100 mph the dual air ram system used to kick in and the rear used to squat and it would just take off.
It's official top speed was about 151mph although many road tests claimed they were faster and in France I had the speedo indicating 166mph so probably around 155 actual which was what my Garmin sat nav claimed at the time.
still not bad and by then it was getting better at 77000 miles, kept it till 178000 miles, apart from a radiator and tyres it was thee most reliable car which they just don't make them like anymore.
Still brings a smile to my face thinking about it.

When I sold it I warned the guy not to be throttle happy but within 6 weeks he wrote it off. Bounced it off barriers front and rear at high speed.

The Lotus Carlton had been an option at the time through my company but the cost of tyres, and front pads and discs at 1k a time and the mileage I was doing didn't make it practical. Jaguar x-type sport gone

I remember reading a magazine road test about the Lotus Carlton. The strap line was something like " one of the few chances you have to get involved in an Indy Car style pile up " . They had taken one down and autobahn at speeds approaching 3 miles a minute. Whistle 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
