Freelander 2 i6 Oil Pressure light

Driving yesterday, Oil pressure light came on after a 45 min drive... Checked oil this morning, seems to be OK, but dip stick is warped, so can't be 100% sure.

Started the car up, no warning light...

I've had this issue before, 100s of Ks from home so took it the nearest garage, and they topped up the oil, problem never reoccurred until now.

Checking the service receipts, my normal garage (LR Specialist), they've been putting 5w 30 oil in it, when the manual says 0w 30... Could the extra viscosity be screwing with the oil pressure sensor?

Any ideas?

The grade wont be screwing anything but the spec may well do if incorrect.

All the dip sticks are like a pigs tail on the diesel 4 cyls so yours may be the same. If in doubt call at a local dealers selling one and just ask for them to pull the dip stick out.

If my oil light came on the engine would be off ASAP, oil level and water level checked and engine temp checked. So did you do that ? History, how long ago was the filter and oil changed. If they all were OK and on restart when warm the light went out I would be tempted to move along on low revs and then get to the bottom of the issue.

A engine is serious money so best advice is dont Censored about, get the pressure checked on a gauge running hot and cold, get the fault codes read. It could be anything from the switch, pressure release valve, overheating (simple as dirty rad vanes) or you left the oil change and filter too long.

Nothing to do with you but I make the point a new can of oil every 6 months is just 6 to 8 beers in a bar yet some owners seem more interested in the sound of the stereo or type of sat nav and willing to fork out hundreds of beers and ignore whats really important having paid thousands of beers for these toys. Thanks Bob,

I straightened up the dip stick, and got a decent read on it, it's almost exactly in between the notches, maybe a little lower, so maybe ever so slightly low on oil.

It was serviced only a few thousands Ks ago by my usual specialist, i.e. full oil and filter change.

No sign of the warning light now, I'm beginning to think I was imagining it...

I'm sure there was a guy on here a while ago with a similar problem he changed oil and filter even though it had been done recently and it went away,as I recall general idea was sometimes you get a dodgy filter.

Hmm, I guess it could be a bad filter, it's been fine for a few thousand Ks since last service though.

Really I'm just putting it down to another addition to the rich tapestry of FL2 faults...

Could have been a stuck oil pressure relief valve (I'm assuming they still have these in modern engines?). Symptom is too high oil pressure when revving and low pressure on tickover. Oh for the days when cars had proper gauges! If it's gone away now it probably wasn't something major like a bearing - once they go they're gone for ever. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

How? Shocked And wouldn't that affect the overall length of it? Surely if straightened it would go longer, giving a higher than true reading? Fair enough it may be marginal but still....

The dipsticks are SO annoying. I've never been able to get a decent reading off it. Whoever designed these in LR should be shot, or at least sacked! Censored

I didn't so much straighten just reduced the warp enough so it could slide it in OK. Just a bit of opposite bend did the job.

The lack of oil level gauge is really annoying. My old Mercedes (7 years older than the FL2) would tell me the exact amount of oil the car required on a digital read out, it was fantastic. I should never have sold that car...
