Oil leak!!

Noticed an oil leak today outside my work, any ideas what this could be? And will I need to remortgage my house! Thanks in advance [/img]

Most likely the silly silicon sump gasket that seems to go on all of them but it does need checking out.

think a bit more info is required really........ and are you sure it was oil as the aircon drain pipe is roughly under the gear stick so was it water from that ?

100% Oil, if you look at the puddle below you can see the black oil floating in it ( which alerted me to the leak)

ok....so its definitely oil

whereabouts in relation to the underside of the car ? in the middle? under a wheel hub? under a diff? gearbox? sump? front of engine? rear of engine?

have you been able to lift the bonnet and have a look around for anything obviously leaking ?

I suggest as a tell tale you put some cardboard under the car overnight. Is it windy where you are? put a couple of stones on top to hold it

Oil leek in Wales - so lets look at this from the info given:
Oil leak outside work - what has that got to do with a car
Any ideas what this could be - You work in a oil refinery

Think what a mechanic has to do to determine where and what oil. You clean down the effected area and run and watch but while doing that also check reservoirs of fluid like the power steering, brake fluid, water level. and other oil levels. Is it dirty black and thick or light oil, different coloured fluids give you a lead? Maybe its just misting oil in the air filter pipes from the turbo. Has anyone changed the oil filter recently spilling oil ? Far too many options I am afraid to be answered easily from afar.

Open bonnet, clean off and look and do those checks
Remove air filter and pipes and see if full of old oil, clean and put back as its normal but it could be your oil drip
Jack up, remove skid pan, look. If a mess, clean off run and look again. Only by looking will you get to the root of your problem.

Sorry if I sound hard but thats what I did for a few years of my younger life, you clean, you wipe and you look, smell and colour comes into it if you know your oils. Do the basics, if the dipstick level is zilch you may have a big issue but if its normal joint the club as most cars shed some oil. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Not hard but a little pedantic on your response there Bob, just as me saying the area is affected not effected but hey, I know what you meant and see no reason to push the point.

The rest of your post is very useful and something the OP would be well advised to follow to determine the cause and then take remedial action Thumbs Up

Indeed :

Almost always, the verb is "affect" and the noun is "effect," but in this case you (and the doctor) are using the verb form of "effect," to mean something like "accomplished," and it's perfectly appropriate.

As the fix is not yet accomplished (meaning to finish something successfully) then in this instance it would be correct to use "affected"

But let's not split hairs here, your points made about cleaning and searching for the fix are spot on Thumbs Up

Hi all, thanks for the replies... I have only just seen these!
Going to have a proper look this weekend but due to me being new to freelanders I was curious to know if there was a common fault that would be immediately apparent ( a luxury that wasn't around before the advent of these forums and your.excellent advice). The oil (there's loads of It!) Seems to be focused around the front passenger side around the intercooler pipe. See photos attached.

I will guess you need a new intercooler and hoses. Look up as one just done with pics. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
