Forum sponsor AJS did me a very good price indeed last time I bought tyres. Mind you that was quite a few years back - once you have two sets it's surprising how long they last. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

I've done about 25k on the orginal Goodyear Wranglers and they are down to about 4mm evenly all round except for the spare which has never seen the light of day.

I intend to replace them towards the end of summer (hope we get one). What tyres do folks recommend? I don't do much off road and find that the wranglers are OK on the farm tracks I use even when muddy and icy. If I change to a different tyre what do I do with the unused spare as it would be a shame to get rid of an unused tyre?

Hello!
I got a FL TD4 MY2011 and just use de NOKIAN Z Line SUV on 235/60 R18 107 W XL; they are amazing and A on Wet, C on Fuel and just 70 dB on noise Smile
They grip very well; summer in Portugal is really hot and the winters are cold (not so much as on England, obvious) and here on the North it rains a lot; the grip is amazing on any situation and weather; they are very comfortable too and with very good mileage; since I brought the first set front/rear I buy always two new ones to the back and move the old rear ones to the front; remember: best/new tyres always on the back!
I just buy them on the internet because in Portugal tyres are expensive; I use 3 sites for comparative purposes and I buy on the best opportunity at that moment; if you wanna try go to (this are the UK version of the Portuguese sites):
Last tyres I brought are best priced at Tyre Leader, but sometimes is better on the others.
I forgot to say that my previous brands on the FL are Continental (original ones and terrible and slippery as hell!) and Pirelli PZERO SUV (very good at high speeds but noisier and not so good on wet conditions)
Best regards
Miguel Ribeiro

Australia 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Sumatra Black

When I bought my car it was fitted with Bridgestone D697 245/65R17 (factory size was 235/65R17).

The Bridgestones were really noisy and I thought I had the dreaded diff problem.

They wore out and I replaced them with Falken Wildpeak AT3 in the same size. 2000 miles later and I am really happy with them. Quiet, yet grip well in the slushy stuff and on the highway. Brett Nicholson

I'm on Michelin Crossclimate SUV 235/60x18, fitted summer 2016.
Previously on Wranglers, which were noisy after half-worn.
(My car has the 3.2-litre petrol engine, so tyre noise is more easily heard).
Crossclimate are, apparently, the first tyre to be rated as a summer and a winter tyre simultaneously.
I live in the Pennines, so all my cars have had winter tyres during winter (until now).
Last winter, the Crossclimates gripped well in snow.
Like many Michelins, they look slightly soft - but feel accurate when steering, and grip really well.
Much more quiet than Wranglers.
Only done about 8000 miles so it's difficult to asses wear, but they look to be doing OK.
Anyway, if you factor in 2 tyre changes a year (for winter/summer tyres) - that's quite a lot of money saved. The quick brown fox

Our Freelander 2 is five and a half years old now. The original Goodyears lasted around 25000 miles and i put G Grabber at"s on, the car has now done a little over 70000.
I have just ordered and they are going on next week 4 of these BFG Urban Terrain.
Anyone had any experience of them ?

Avon ZX7's for me and can't complain at all about road noise or wet weather grip. Much better than the roadians that it came with. They were terrible in the wet.

+2 for the Avons. Mine have been on for around four months now and after the worn original Conti set, they are refreshingly quiet and grippy.

I never took either off road (beyond grass caravan pitches) so can't really comment on anything other than road use.

I've gone for a set of 4 Goodyear Efficient grip SUV. They are similar to the original Goodyear Wrangler but the ratings for fuel economy and noise are better than the Wrangler and they are also a few quid cheaper. I'll let you know how they perform.

The OP is sorted, but for anyone else, Michelin CrossClimate SUV if you never go off road. Comfortable, quiet, responsive.

Would be OK in mud I think (M&S rated), look likely to get ripped up by rocks, although I don't know.

OMG, just wasted a lot of time reading tyre reviews...

Every tyre seems to be a “Marmite” for every good review there is an opposite. For every “good on snow” comment there is a “lethal on snow” response. Then every so often there is a “had slow punctures, so tyre specialist advised that the only solution was new tyres all round” - I bet he did Smile !

My FL2 currently has 235/65R17 108V Scorpion verdes, but the fronts are nearing the limit. Rather than do anything dramatic, I reckon I might simply buy another two Scorpion verdes but opt for the all-season version. Could be tempted by Quatrac 5s, though, as I have found them to be excellent tyres on the Volvo.

Based on my Defender experience, my instinct is to put the all-seasons on the front, as the improved snow-shedding can be more useful on the steered wheels. But I am new to the world of the Haldex, so I perhaps need to rethink this. Current rears are new enough that there shouldn’t be a diameter difference or grip difference in most situations. In snow, I am cautious enough that understeer tends to be a greater issue than oversteer.

Any thoughts/advice? 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Orkney Grey

Couple days ago, one of the Scorpion Verde all seasons M+S front tyre busted at the tyre wall. The set has done 34000 miles with about 3.5-4 mm left in each tyre with only one rotation front to back.
I decided to change to the Michelin Crossclimate set as I wasn't sure about the Scorpion Verde with the tyre wall. As I was in Spain, the Michelin costs €728 + $66 for the front break pads all in.
While waiting for the Michelin, my full size spare Scorpion Zero, which has about 4mm tread, made whoop whoop noise at about 35 miles/h it went away at higher speeds. I had asked them to change it to the back then fitted the best Scorpion Verde tyre into the spare rim replacing the Scorpion Zero. When I bought the fl2 the tyres were allnScorpion Zero, the tyres noise were reduced as soon as I changed to the Scorpion Verder, I think the new Michelin tyres are much quieter but they do look soft; time will tell if the loose rocks will shred them.

Scorpion Verdes here, lots of back roads and farm tracks , great on normal roads/tracks and wet but not brilliant in mud.
Wearing well too!
