freelander 2 questions...

hi all,
I have now decided to buy a secondhand Freelander 2. I was confused between the 2005 Range Rover sports , Hyundai Santa Fe and the freelander 2. the built quality is no where near the Range Rover S but for the amount of money I have, I would be able to get either a nice 2010 70,000 under Freelander 2 or a 2006 160,000 up RR. i would love to have the RR but I need something more reliable.. so I went for the FL2.
I have a few questions...

1) my car has no front LCD... its just a storage box on top. is it easy to connect a LCD? I can see many on eBay but I am not sure if the connections would actually be inside the car itself...

2) The engine and the AC compressor noise is pretty loud inside the cabin.. I can hear the compressor shut off and on very clearly... is this normal for a Freelander 2?

3) the car has rear lcd at the bottom where the arm rest fits, there are many av input holes... would I be able to install an external arm rest with this sort of setup?

4) is it possible to get the front seat arm rest which is independent and actually attached to the seats itself? at the moment I have no arm rest at all...

thanks guys

Hi there, to help others come up with useful suggestions can you let us know what the trim level is that you have, from what you mention about the front having no LCD I would have to guess that it's a "S" trim.
The rear LCD is not standard neither are the additional AV inputs so it sounds like a previous owner has added things over time.
Perhaps you could put some pictures up of what you are looking at to give us all an idea too.

There are lots on here who have carried out all sorts of modifications and will be able to advise what is an isn't possible for you to achieve

1) there will be no easy solution to retro fit a genuine LCD screen, but plenty on here have added a Tom Tom or Garmin Sat nav which is easy and you can feed the power cable to a piggy back fuse under the glove box. Some have even fitted android tablets.
Plenty of threads on here if you use the search facility

2) Its not the quietest engine, so don't expect silence but it shouldn't be deafening. The compressor shouldn't make much noise really, maybe noisy bearings??

3) Not sure what you mean by an LCD at the bottom where the arm rest fits.... any pictures ??

4) its not possible to retro fit the factory folding armrests on the front seats, however you can buy a very good centre armrest/cubby box that is a 5 minute job to fit, again plenty of threads via the search.

welcome to FL2 ownership, wise choice over the RRS if your pockets aren't bottomless Very Happy

Hi all,
Thanks for the reply. At first I had thought it is the basic S trim but in papers it says GS. The car is very basic
No heated seats,no electric seats, no arm rest, no front screen , basic stereo, fabric seats no leather etc.. but good thing is that the suspension is very soft and comfortable to drive daily also the car has no creaks and rattles.. the Santa Fe made millions of rattles on a pot hole.. and well I guess most of the money goes for the name "Land Rover".

if you have the all terrain dial by the gear lever, steering wheel controls for cruise and stereo, dual zone climate and auto lights/wipers then coupled with what you have listed there it sounds like the GS spec (1 up from the bottom of the range and the most popular model)

If you look in my gallery you will see some pics of my white GS 2008MY.... ok so the first owner specced sunroof and roof rails as extras but the rest is standard or what mods I made.

And Land Rover will hold their value much better than any other equivalents

Can you confirm if you went for the 2010 Freelander then as the GS spec for this year shows as having :

17” 6-spoke alloy wheels,
Alpine ICE with eight speakers,
Automatic Climate Control, remote ICE controls, loadspace cover, automatic headlamps, rain sensing windscreen wipers, cruise control, fog lamps and power wash, rear Park Distance Control (PDC),
powerfold mirrors,
Terrain Response,
Bluetooth phone system

GS has a better leather interior from 2013 but still no screens. Remember more toys = more bills.

Some on here have found a seal on the steering column is not fitted correctly (or missing) and that lets in engine noise. So check that and other grommets on bulk head. If the AC is noisy a gas up may help, ask an AC specialist for an opinion.

Find a good local independent LR specialist as the main dealer charges will soon wipe that smile off your face. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

IMO the GS was the best value for money, £23k new, well equipped and as has been said very popular. I had 2 a 08MY TD4 manual then 11MY SD4. I only ended up with a 13MY XS because LR were offering a £3k deposit contribution and by 13MY the GS started to loose some of its standard kit but added leather.

Hi,
Sorry my car is actually 2009.
It does have the terrain control , dual ac, all wheel controls , auto lights but like I said, doesn't have all the stuff I mentioned earlier

looking at the seat material/pattern and the mid line stereo you may have the XS spec OR it may be the 2010MY from late 2009...

I don't think 2009MY had the mid line stereo and hands free as standard on the GS

I placed my order in late 2013 for an MY14 vehicle. I don't recall the 3k LR contribution was this for PCP only ? MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

I am not sure what the trim is but when I put the ref number I get it as GS trim.
I have added some more photos. Hope this helps

XS spec at that year would have half leather and electric seats I think ? Remember there were loads of cost options available when ordering a new vehicle. Could be a GS with a upgraded audio pack. Might be worth registering on Topix to get the full build details. That way you willl know exactly what you have. Thumbs Up

i would say you have a 2010 model year GS.

Still not sure what you mean by the LCD screen between the seats though.

You can easily fit an aftermarket sat nav in the cubby hole, and a cubby box armrest will be around £100 new and is a very useful addition.
