I am looking for a MY11 onwards Freelander and was wondering whether anyone has remapped a TD4 from these models (MY11+) so that it is similar to a SD4?

As far as I can tell for MY11+ that's the only engine difference between the TD4 and SD4?

I am in Sydney and would love to hear from anyone who has had a MY11-13 TD4 remapped locally.

Also can someone please tell me after which year model / VIN was the rear differential issue resolved?
It seems to be MY12 onwards? But I'm not sure if all MY11s suffer from it too.

Apparently there are some other differences with the SD4, it's not just remapping. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

I'd stick to a standard SD4 over a remapped TD4 .

I believe the SD4 has different injectors and bigger turbo, the TD4 can be mapped to gain extra power but the delivery of it is not in SD4 territory, the latter of which can be easily mapped up 220bhp.

Have you thought of getting a petrol engine. Ok, they do burn more fuel but depending on your usage it may not make that much difference. I was in my sister's top of the range Evoque the other day & compared to the petrol it really belongs on a farm. The petrol engine is a gem!

Do the numbers on your fuel usage before committing to a diesel.

It is the one thing I listened to my long term mechanic. he said for my usage do not get a diesel.

I only stick 98 or 95 if I have to in the car as you probably know our 91 is rubbish. I did this with my previous car which I had for 250,000 km & 18 years. & over a number of tests found 98 to be a smidgin more economical. If it was not actually more economical there was at the very least less fuel filter issues in the long run.

You don't get any more power out of the car but the engine feels better and you do get more milage out of a tank. 91 is false economy & is costing you more at the mechanic!

Lightwater - I envy you that you even had the option of a Petrol.
I am aware that my usage isn't really idea for a Diesel but sadly I didn't have the option to go Petrol here in the UK

Can someone point me to a technical file that supports the idea that the SD4 has a different turbo or injectors. I have looked hard for this and cannot find it.

I have, however, read elsewhere that the part numbers for the SD4 and TD4 engines components were exactly the same. But again with no supportive documentation links.

There is a very nice TD4 with a sunroof that I'm in love with but I really would like the extra torque of the SD4 model. But if it is a matter of reprogramming the ECU I would take that TD4 in an instant.

The only parts website I can find does not describe separate parts for SD4 vs TD4 but rather calls it a single turbo short block diesel.

the TD4 can be remapped quite comfortably to 190bhp, just be careful not to take the torque much higher than standard.
Your biggest difference in smoothness of acceleration and in gear, making it feel faster at the very least plus improved economy in most cases.

If you really like the TD4 you have seen and it ticks all your other boxes then go for it, try it in standard for a bit and then maybe remap if you still feel the need.

The torque figures are exactly the same for both TD4 and SD4 engines, the SD4 produces more BHP But will have a lot of that power soaked up by the autobox. (SD4 only available as an auto)You would have to drive each model and see what you think. There is no real point in basing any decision you make on "paper" specs of different engines. If you can get behind the wheel and see how they perform in real life then go from there. On a different note has anyone retrofitted an SD4 engine into a TD4 manual car then had it remapped? I would think it would go like one of those stinky slippy shovel things

The Land Rover VIN check website makes the comment "power limitation"

Did you have your TD4 remapped, and who did you use on the Gold Coast? Would you recommend them and the result?

My understanding is that the clutch or gearbox on a manual TD4 cannot handle the power in first and so is limited in first gear. Any remap will have to take that into consideration.

I am sure the SD4 and later from MY 2011 turbo's water cooled, the earlier turbos are oil cooled
