Well after many years of hand washing the pots (nightmare at Sunday lunch), we have had a change around in the utility room which involved the removal of a cupboard and some cable work and have now purchased a dishwasher! Not delivered yet as we are putting some new flooring down first but won't be long.

We've ordered a Bosch (can't remember which model) from the local retailer I used to work for as my mate is the manager there and did us a deal. I have also purchased some Finish Powerball Quantum Max tablets from Amazon after reading the rave reviews from customers. The mother of all dishwasher tablets apparently.

My question for the seasoned dishwasher folk is how much rinsing of pots do you do before putting them in the dishwasher? I've heard that if you don't rinse off the excess crap, they won't come up fully clean in the dishwasher.

No prep at all. Occasionally you get a reject item but rarely. Ours is a new Bosch, one of the super silent ones. It's spookily quiet.

I just scrape of any solids in to the bin

We're on our second Bosch (has a Seimens label, but made by Bosch, as are Neff and some others). After our 1st one packed up after about 10 yrs., we foolishly tried to save money by buying an Indesit - big mistake, the heater packed up 3 weeks out of warranty. Will never buy a chinese appliance again!

We just scrape any sizeable food scraps off plates, the d/w takes care of everything else. We use the LIDL W5 All in One Tabs. The Aldi Magnum All in One are virtually identical. Much cheaper than Finish and seem to work just as well.

Most dishwashers require rinse aid adding and also dishwasher salt. You only add them every so often as they are stored in the dishwasher and slowly added over time. I cant be more specific as the regular user (SWMBO) is out at work so cant ask further. Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018

Rinsing the pots - it depends, are you on a water meter?
Seriously we aren't, and rinse thoroughly - it's easier than getting on my knee to clean the filter.

Rinse aid - depends on your water hardness, ours is VERY soft, if Galiffery water is from a limestone reservoir (think Peak District) it might be needed for the glassware. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

as Andy131 posted, if you don't rinse solids off plates and pots etc you will need to clean the filter more regularly, and I would also suspect you would not get the best wash.

rinse aid and salt only required in hard water areas.

I'd also add that if you have good quality glasses that you continue to wash them by hand. Our dishwasher tends to take the shine off glass after a few washes and they remain dull (even using the glass setting). FL2 Metropolis, Loire Blue, ebony/ivory

I bin solids and cold rinse as its a dishwasher not a waste bin: Reason for rinse is being a family of 2 it may go on every 2 to 3 days.

Re tablets and maintenance, tend to buy in bulk if tablets on offer as once a year they will be half price in most supermarkets. Salt needs topping up from time to time but most new machines will show a red light when it wants feeding. Every so often we bang in dishwasher cleaner, another item to buy when on offer.

Got a Bosch and works fine and ignored paying for extend warranties as I do with most things. Our Bosch seems to run much longer on ECO than some other settings ? Maybe ECO does not lift the temp as much but I do wonder if its saving the World as it seems to take twice as long with pumps running etc. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Our Bosch went in in 1992, the switch went a few years ago, to turn it off when you open the door, bypassed it, so turn off before opening, if running. Other than that it is still going, only use it once a week. Have to use powder as the dispenser is pre tablets. We rinse everything as cleaning the filter is a pain. We have really soft water so do not need salt. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

We have an Indesit that we bought in 2000 and still going strong. The only thing that has gone wrong with it was that the heater failed a couple of years ago. I got onto one of the spares suppliers like UKWhitegoods or buyspares (who have lots of how to fix it videos) and discovered that the heater is fitted to 57 different models of dishwasher. In fact if you look at a lot of the spares for these things they have the same bits in regardless of the badge on the front so I never buy "posh" brands now. We scrape but never rinse. Never had a problem with our Bosch. We use rinse aid and salt, we have hard water. Don't put your best glasses in, they will eventually go cloudy. Also, overtime the aluminium (I think) pins that hold the handles on our kitchen knives have beeen corroded away.
