TURBO ISSUE - Sounds like slipping metal on metal! HELP!

Hi
2011 - SD4 HSE Automatic.

We've been experiencing a strange noise present normally when accelerating. We've tried to get car mechanics to sort it but sods law says that the symptoms never present when there is someone technical in the car!

We think we may have narrowed it down to the turbo. There is a YouTube clip giving some examples of the noise on 3 different LR models including a FL2. See https://youtu.be/Rr5Hl2r4Rq4

Does anyone know whether this is a brand new Turbo job or just something like a split hose?!?

Your advice appreciated?

Leave the turbo alone... Laughing
It's a perfectly normal sound for the conditions in the tests.
If you (and the technician) really want to hear it, engine to normal temperature (80 deg.C), hard foot on the brake in order for the car to remain stationary, gear selector in drive, press gas pedal to about 2000 rpm and then quickly release the gas pedal.

But this isn't surely a normal sound?!? The times it does it are completely inappropriate. Surely it is a fault and needs addressing..

It hasn't always done this.

What do you mean inappropriate?
It does it when the turbo is spinning too fast, because you requested from it to generate boost and then the engine is not able to use all that boost because you've backed out on the throttle.
The problem is when it does it during sustained engine load.
But for sure, in your case, it does it when you take your foot of the gas, right?

The problem exhibits on acceleration, so when you have power on the throttle, rather than taking power off.

If it's on gear changes, then again it's pretty normal. Not normal is, for example, to do it at 80+ mph during hard acceleration. Which is also debatable...
Take a look below. Indeed is on a gasoline car, where the throttle flap complicate things, but the idea is the same:

But it hasn't always made this noise. It only started doing it the last couple of months.

We've previously owned a 57 plate TD4 F2 Auto which never made this noise in the 30,000 miles of ownership.

The noise we are getting sounds wrong - I just can't believe it is normal operation!

There seems to be mixed views depending on which website you look at or which YouTube video you view as to whether turbo flutter, or compressor surge is good or bad for your turbo with most suggesting it is BAD news!

OK, do whatever you want in order to feel comfortable and have no future doubts. In the end, it's all it counts. Very Happy

I do appreciate your replies Alex but as this noise has only recently presented itself I can't believe it to be standard operation. Most FL2 owners hearing this would too be cautious.

I'll take it to our local trusty mechanic to get his opinion - just thought I'd put the feelers out on here first to see what advice comes back.

Thanks

Hi, it's not a normal turbo sound, it's sound of turbo without external waste gate or blocked wastegate. This flutter is sound of stalled turbo when pressure is hitting back the spinning turbo (when you stop acceleration) Its sounds like WRC cars where is no external waste gate. In long term may damage the turbo. Thanks

Mine has the identical noise, Due to other issues, the turbo has been replaced, and its still has this 'fluttering" sound occasionaly.
It ceratainly not a noise that's normal.
did anyone fix it, and if so , how
Cheers

Has anyone found a resolution for this feature? Like others, mine has not always fluttered but is now doing so on a regular basis? Typically featuring when warm, from a standing start and when it's changing gear at around 2000rpm.
Thanks,
