I recently bought a 2007 Freelander 2 from an auction, stupidly without seeing it, but as everyone always says - I got it for a good price! Not such a good price when you consider ive already spent 1 k on it and there is more to do!

Basically the car had been sat still for 10 months with a leaky sun roof, which had resulted in lots and lots and lots of water coming in! Problems included a clutch seized up (un seized it with the use of a tractor and a chain!), blowers not turning off, aircon not working, not starting, ignition not turning off when i took the key out, etc etc etc. I took it to a local Land Rover specialist (not the dealership) and they have replaced one of the multi switches which solved most of the problems. An oil sensor so the terrain thingy works again, the alternator, and lots of other bits at a cost of just over 1k! Oh and fixed the sun roof!

I do however have 2 problems that I would really like some help with! First - the rear passenger door doesn't look on the button, and the window doesn't work. I suspect this is where the majority of the water came from, so that would explain it. Normally you can just replace the module or the motor, but the garage said it all needs calibrating again by them if you do that. Its not just a case of throwing it in. Is that true? Or can I just replace the module in the door?

Secondly, when I got the car the sat nav screen worked fine. Now it doesn't even come on and all you can see is a very faint land rover logo in the background.. anyone know what that is. Its a bit tempermental.. sometimes it comes on fine - but the majority of the time its off. And its getting worse the longer I own it!!

Finally - the volume control for the radio doesn't work. It turns it on and off, but doesn't do the volume - you have to do that on the steering wheel..

Are these common faults? Or are they things that I should look into?

like you say, it all depends on what you paid for it in comparison to current prices for FL2 with similar age/mileage,

if, after spending that initial grand, things have improved greatly then you could be well on your way to a bargain.

I think the window problem can be cured by changing the modulator etc, and the calibration just involves holding the window switch in the up/down positions as you would do after a battery refit etc.

Ive not seen anyone have a specific problem with the volume button, but you can buy replacement stereo facsias off ebay for not much money and its an easy swap over. However that's just a minor niggle really IMO.

The sat nav screen could well just be a new screen, again they do come up on ebay, and I know someone on here bought a 2nd hand one for £40.

So it may not be as bad as you think.

Wow - thanks very much with the semi vote of confidence When it arrived it was in a LOT worse state then I thought! There was nothing on the auction about the water, or the electrics or even the fact the clutch was stuck on and didn't drive!! Sold as seen eh!

Paid just shy of 4k for it and its a 2007 with 80k on it, so I think I should be looking at 6.5 or somewhere round that, although I have no intentions of selling it!

Would the modulator affect both the door lock and windows on the rear door? Its only that one, the rest all look fine..

The other thing is although I have taken the surface water (45 litres) out, the garage said the foam under the carpet was SOAKED! So any ideas on how to get that out would be great!

Lets hope the last few things are just little niggles and nothing major!

with only 80k on the clock ive seen them going for a couple of grand more than 6.5k, so you could be onto a winner.

Its only a semi confident as your a lot braver than me taking on something like this

Im no mechanic, just pick up bits and pieces from this forum, but there are guys on here who know the cars better than any LR mechanic, and are more than happy to share their knowledge. Im sure people will start to provide answer once they have their feet after work.

IMO the best thing you cant do with the carpets is take them out (probably involve getting the seats out) get it all out to dry thoroughly in a warm garage or something. 45 litres is a hell of a lot to come out and it will give you a chance to inspect the state of the floorpans etc.

But it does sound as if you have already broken the back of the work needed to get it back on the road. Remember these are LR and in spite of the posh bits they are designed to go off road and maybe get flooded out. Important bits should be mostly sealed so still be ok.

Oh absolutely - im relying on that - and its a lovely smooth ride! Not slow either! We have an X trail as well which has been the day to day car. Got this to replace my wifes astra - she loves it - apart from the smell!

I def think we have broken the back of it, but like you im not a mechanic. I do however have a friend that is, and he can do normal bits, but I was a bit worried about the calibration side of things, if I had to keep taking it back to a lr garage. Sounds like I can do a mix though which is good.

I have to say re the water and the carpet thing that was my thinking too. May be a job for the mechanic though, get here, get seats and carpet out - get it all dried off while he changes the oil and looks at the rear door / window. The only things I can find on ebay are the window regulators, but im convinced it is an electrical faulty bought on by water, as opposed to a mechanical failure. I suppose if the water came in that side though, it could have shorted the motor on the window and the same on the door - maybe that's the best way forwards after all.

Had a quick look on the radio side of things as well and all I can find on ebay is the plastic facias, not the whole unit which is what I think I will need. Because if you take the button off and turn the metal knob itself underneath - its still has no effect

Saying that - these are lovely little problems as opposed to where I was a week ago. Although I did have an extre grand in my bank balance then!!

The stereo fascia are separate to the main bulk of the head unit and I believe they just plug and play so the ones you've seen on the bay should work fine as long as they are same as yours

My honest view is if you can move it on as a trade in without losing money do so and get one that is less problematic with a good warranty. Harsh but only time will tell if I am being too negative. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

As far as I know the Fascia contains the buttons and the display, it is connected to the radio behind it.

So I think replacing the fascia (part number LR001070?) will solve your button problem. I would try that first because that is a lot cheaper that going for an aftermarket solution.

Seems coincidence that both the window and door lock on same door not working so before replacing any bits I would check you have power to the motors as it could be a wiring problem further back .. With experience the only way to get rid of the remaining water/ moisture is to completely remove the interior to remove the under carpet wadding and dry it outside when it's expected to be warm and dry for a few days . Otherwise it will never dry out and you will not only be troubled with electrical problems as the contacts and connectors in the under floor wiring etc corrode but the worst thing will be the constant damp fusty smell and Windows steaming up . Once you get the seats out its pretty straight forward but worth the time and effort .

Dehumidifier! You'll be surprised how much moisture & water they can move ... You can pick a small-ish one up from Homebase/B&Q. REME .. Rough Engineering Made Easy
