Has anyone painted their roof rails gloss black?

No! Why?

You will have to paint a few coats & sand in between coat otherwise all you will end up with is gloss orange peal effect.

Take one of the front covers off, should be enough area in there for half a dozen tests. I would not remove the rear covers as they barely hang on & will only get more vulnerable.

You should be able to get the same paint locally - ie. powdercoat touch up paint Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Down here due to the intense sun anything that is less black on the roof is a bonus.

It looks like that process applies to steel. Unlikely to work on roof rails which are aluminium.

aren't the roof rails powder coated already ? how would the process work I wonder?

will be quite a job to sand, fill, prime and spray them up I would imagine (and yes I know LRNUT is not shy of adventurous mods )
