Hi everyone, can someone tell me if the haldex unit is essential to the rear diff? or what part does it play? lets say the haldex vent pipe had been disconnected and blocked, what would the outcome be?

The Haldex is a clutch which engages/disengages drive to the rear. It is mounted on the front of the diff, but is not part of the diff itself.

I'd say the most likely result of a detached/blocked vent would be contamination of the Haldex oil. A change of oil could be a good move.

Vent pipe ? What does a Vent do, it Vents, if it did not Vent it would build up pressure . Once you have pressure something has to move or go bang. What may move could just be oil between the units or expelled.

If it was not needed LR would not fit it as it costs money they desperately need to build newer inferior models.

hi bob, believe me i am thinking, i am really looking for confirmation that the haldex would drastically affect the rear diff and what would be the consequences to the diff
i have a court case going on and just need for someone to confirm it could or could not be disastrous to the RD

In that case I would suggest an engineers report as I doubt the court would pay heed to an online forum response.

Austen @ Bell Engineering could certainly give you a heads up and overview of the 4WD set up on the Freelander and the consequences but an independent engineers report would be best option for a legal argument.

You will need a qualified professional opinion if you wish to argue in a small claims court something failed due to a lack of care in carrying out a repair and for that you will need to pay someone.

yes the vehicle went for the repair to the RD it was returned with oil spillage all over the rear exhaust and leaking, i then had to pay for an inspection and repair, the haldx vent was disconnected and blocked, would this have caused damage to the RD?

the seller said the haldex has nothing to do with the RD

Why did you not just get any poor repair corrected as the trade can get it wrong and usually will put it right ?

Now an inspection and a seller is mentioned ??? not sure anyone is going to be able to sort out your string of events on here. I wish you luck but do a cost benefit analysis before any day out in court.

As for oil dripping, Bell serviced my haldex, its fine, but some oil gathers on sub frame when removing it and it has to drip off over a few hours. I asked Austin at Bell as I had noticed it on picking up, he explained that to me and off I went into the sunset as a happy customer a year ago. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Well my diff and Haldex are on my workbench at the moment

I think that if the short metal pipe that vents the Haldex was blocked then this could cause a pressure build up in the Haldex clutch enclosure which may damage the seal between the diff and the Haldex clutch enclosure.
