I'm retiring at end of month after working for 45 years.

Anyone know if I would need to sign on ? don't want any benefits or anything, just wondering about my state pension/national insurance credits.

I will, get my state pension in about 3 years time.

Get a statement from DWP on your state pension entitlement. They'll tell you if you've enough NI contributions for a full state pension and when it will be paid. If you've enough contributions you don't need to top up nor sign on. Have a happy retirement.

You can do it online.

Just be aware that when you set up an account (if you do not already have one) you will need a mobile phone to receive an access code each time you log on to the system. i.e. user id, password and passcode they send to the mobile. If you are drawing a pension immediately you can not " sign on " . If there is a gap between retiring and drawing your personal pension you can" sign on " for contribution based Job Seekers Allowance but you would have to say you were looking for work. If you have left with an enhanced " redundancy " package you may find you have been over taxed under PAYE . If you have been overtaxed you can not apply for immediate refund if you are drawing JSA.

For your state pension you do not need to do anything.

There you go, free advice from my ( voluntary) redundancy last year. I didn't bother with JSA, as I wanted my tax refund more than the 3 months allowance I could have claimed until my pension kicked in.( claiming would not have bothered me one bit after paying my whack from 18 to 61 ) If you have any dealings with the tax office to consider, get onto it asap, their turnaround time is appalling took me 9 months to get most of it sorted ( and I've had a very nice Chartered Accountant doing all my tax affairs )

I've accessed the online statement for my pension with national insurance contributions up to April 2016 taken into consideration.

So is this figure accurate and/or will it change over the next 3 years, as I will not be making NI contributions ?

this is really why I was wondering if I should be "signing on"

You have enough years in Iain. You don't need anything more after 35 qualifying years. Your quotation from the government will take into account any years you were contracted out of SP2 in an employer's pension scheme. Hi back to the pension figure will that rise in line with inflation ,or is that what you will get at the time you retire.also note the grandchild ni contribution you can claim.if your now on the school run in retirement .
