Heater blower gone bang!

Got a 2008 Freelander 2.

Driving along today and the heater blower started humming. Very quickly it got deafeningly loud and then the whole car started vibrating. Switched the blower off and back to smooth silence.

When I took a look under the bonnet, I can see that part of the fan has disappeared and it looks like a stick had got in there and jammed itself destroying the fan.

Not a major problem, I thought, until I looked at the Haynes manual. According to that, you have to take the whole dash out to get to the heater motor!

Has anybody taken the motor out without removing the dash? Any hints (apart from not switching the heater fan on).

It's not the whole dash... Just the glove box and the CJB.
Then you will need a special tool for removing the blower.
Just use the real service manual, not the Haynes one... Very Happy

Thanks for that. I have got the full manual but it is on my other laptop at home so I couldn't check it.

Haynes say take the doors off, take the front seats out, gear selector and surround and dash but no mention of the special tool!

Good old Haynes.

The special land rover tool isn't very strong. Mine was stuck so garage used a dremmel to cut into pieces. Access from engine bay.

I was wondering if I could just change the fan part via the opening in the engine bay. Worth a thought.

I bought a Morris 1100 in 1963 and the heater was £10 extra, I still have the receipt. Interestingly purchase tax then was 25%. Remember there are never problems, just new challenges

Toady VAT is charged at 20% of a car’s pre-tax cost, plus costs associated with putting the vehicle on the road. They are:

Transporting it from the factory to the dealership
Preparing it for sale (checking it over)
Supplying and fitting numberplates
Supplying and fitting options

Not a lot has changed really has it. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
