Sorrento holiday cancelled/Lake District booked

Sad

Our flight out was scheduled for Tuesday the 2nd but we phoned to cancel yesterday (we meaning me and my sister). My dad is having surgery on his back on Tuesday and family is more important. The holiday really was not meant to be I think after things seemed to conspire against us.

To cut a long story short, following my topic on waiting times for back surgery on the 17th, the cancer specialist at Kings Mill Hospital phoned us to say he needed to go down to Nottingham City Hospital promptly because they had finally reported back on the MRI scan after 11 days Rolling Eyes and it revealed 2 fractured discs from the tumor in his back.

He was admitted there on the 18th and after several doctors visited and another MRI scan over a few days, the spinal specialists at QMC said they would be operating, probably Friday 21st or Monday 24th. Then the excuses started! No beds post op at QMC so they would not be moving him. Surgery, they told us, was not the problem, it was all about having a bed afterwards.

He was finally moved on Wednesday 26th with surgery to follow on Thursday. Surprise surprise, new excuses came in and they put it back to Friday 28th. Hospital stay approx 48 hours post operation so this was our last chance to still be able to go on holiday. Due to cuts, they only had one theatre running instead of three and my dad was 3rd on the list.

An emergency came in so it got cancelled again! He's now 1st on the list for Tuesday pending no backlogs from the bank holiday weekend otherwise it will be Wednesday. 3 weeks since they told him to come in promptly!! Evil or Very Mad The state of the NHS is just unreal.

I just want my dad to have the operation and get better, I have sent off for a claim form and bought my insurance back in January way before this MRI revealed the spinal injury. We are planning a 4 night break in the Lake District now starting 6th of May but not parting with any money until the op has gone ahead and he's out of hospital.

Sorry to hear that Doc. Got to agree with you about the state of the NHS. My wife works part-time for the NHS as an audio typist, typing the consultants letters to go out for referrals. Most of the people she works with are lazy bitches who only want to type for particular consultants who speak clear English as they are easy to type up. She forced herself to learn on consultants with non-English accents so consequently she gets all of them to do. They are supposed to type them up in date order but they often don't. Trouble is, she can often pick up a referral that others won't touch that's been waiting in the system 12 days into a 14 day referral leaving them only two days to get the patient in. Perhaps that could be why your Dad's took 11 days to be reported? It's shocking really. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Sorry to learn of your news Doc. Here's wishing your Dad well and an early recovery. I have got to know QMC well over the last 20 years 😳. Mainly with issues for my wife, bless her. I had a hip replacement in there just over 6 years ago. That hospital is huge - 18 Theatres!

Thanks guys. As well as being concerned about my dad, I was stressed about losing the holiday but it turned out the not knowing was worse. I'm less stressed now I know the holiday speculation is over. One less thing on my mind. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Just a quick update. My dad had his op today and all has gone according to plan. Fingers crossed that he should be out in 48 hours. If so, we will head off to the Lake District for a quick break on Saturday. Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby
