I phoned my insurer (AA) today to obtain a quote on a remap for my 08 Golf TDi and they will respond in 48 hours apparently. I found an advert on Google which suggests they are one of the key insurers when it comes to modified cars and its safe to say that the boy racer days are long gone and I am seen as a lower risk at 33 with 8 years NCB.

My car has just had a major service and MOT so I was holding out until those were done before making inquiries. The power increases from 105bhp to 130bhp and the torque from 250nm to 310nm. I am told by owners that it is the best modification I could ever carry out and transforms the car. It increases MPG and is still within what the clutch setup can handle.

Have any of you guys ever modified any car and if so, what sort of costs were you hit by?

When I insured my Freelander with Lancaster Ins ..... they wanted to know EVERY feature I had changed since the vehicle build from the factory.

Further I had to list manufactures of all accessories and state if those had been modified. Just as well they didn't want drawings of the parts I built myself ....... as I don't do drawings ..... all designed out of my head in the workshop.

If ever the vehicle was in a crash ....... I think they would just write it off due to its age and 'non-standard' parts.

Insurers don't usually care about small items such as high performance bulbs but a change of wheels, an air filter or the mod I mentioned, fair enough. I just wonder how much they might quote me for it, especially when you consider that a search on compare the market showed many insurers wouldn't entertain the idea and those that did came out around £10 more per month  LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I insured all my heavily modified Freelander 1's with Adrian Flux. Even told me that it would be better to load up the vehicle with as many mods as possible as wouldn't cost any more than just fitting a lift kit. They were cheaper than most were without the modifications.
They also do modified car insurance. So, well worth a phone call.

+1 for Adrian Flux, used them for my kit car and it came out cheaper than the Ford I had at the time. FL2 Metropolis, Loire Blue, ebony/ivory
