I am thinking about getting a Sat Nav for Christmas. I seem to remember someone on this site had managed to fit a Garmin Sat Nav in the empty space above the radio in the Freelander 2. I quite liked that idea because I don't want to mount the Sat Nav on my windscreen. However, I can't find the thread now. Is anyone able to point me in the right direction and/or give any views on decent Sat Navs (in particular those that can be mounted on a bracket in the space above the radio)?

That is very helpful - thanks very much. Although these are very impressive, I am not sure that I am brave or clever enough to do any mods myself. I would rather use some non-invasive surgery and merely mount the Sat Nav in the cubby hole using the bracket that (I think) it comes with. Does anyone have any experience of doing something like that?

I realise that will not be very integrated, it will need to be removed when I am not in the car etc, but my days of customising my motor are behind me (I would probably mess it up).

I have the Garmin Nuvi 250W that fits nicely in the hole with its own bracket.

The kit comes with a small metal disk which has sticky tape on one side. I simply stuck this to the top of the hole and then use the suction mount as nornal to hold the Satnav and then run the power lead down to the lighter socket.

I'll take some photos of it and put them in my gallery later.

My garmin 250 simply jams into the cubby (as the cubby gets smaller the deeper into it you get) no need for brackets etc and its nicely shielded from the sun not very high tech I know but less is often more.
For most journeys it will run off its own battery so there is not often the need for a power lead trailing down the dash. At work

Thanks to all - great stuff.

I have used the same method as Dave by sticking the metal disc to the upper side of the cubby hole and sticking the window mount to this. This I believe has advantages over fitting the system completely into the cubby hole in that as the mount protrudes slightly it can be angled to face the driver, this also allows access to the cubby to store sunglasses etc, The Garmin can also be easily taken off the mount and removed for safety and updates, plus the whole mount can be removed so as nothing is on show that says to a potential thief that a satnav might be in the car. The main downside is that the power lead has to be run to the power sockets by the gearstick, I am looking into having an extra power socket fitted at the back of the cubby hole to tidy this up.

I have a Garmin 200W, this minimalist approach works for me too.

For info this approach wont work for TomTom models. I've tried with a Go300 and the more recent 720. Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor ... but not any more ... ... psst look at my gallery!

You should check out Garmin NUvi 5000. i just mounted mine over the weekend and now awaiting to finish off with a few minor taps (audio into aux) and awaiting the arrival of the cut-out frame.

if you check the measurements of the nuvi 5000, it fits snuggly after a few minor ops to the "bin area".

it does not have bluetooth but it does have video input for reverse cam and/ or video in. i have just fitted the reverse cam and hooked up me iphone to the same video in for video podcast/ movie playback. cant wait for the weekend when i can have the audio coming out of the car's speakers.
