Auxiliary heater.

Auxiliary heater:

We all have "BOOSTER HEATER", and the service recall P011 is about this.
But,
almost every new diesel powered car comes with an auxiliary heater
(according to http://www.danhag.de/ ) :
Due to the high efficiency of modern diesel engines, it tooks the engine a lot of time to reach the operating temperature, especially in cold winter months. So an auxiliary heater is installed wich will support the coolant to heat up. This heater is an adequate parking heater but it only works at temperatures below 5°C while the engine is running.
If you want to use the auxiliary heater as parking heater, you can ask your garage to unlock the parking heater funktion. Or you can create a simply circuit which simulates a running engine and a temperature below 5°C.
There is probably already a parking heater installed, we simply do not know about it, or ....

I didn´t ordered "auxiliary heater" to my danish car (6.900 dkk) because I had planned to install a WEBASTO heater .
Conclusion: No auxiliary heater installed in Denmark as standard (= warm country !?!)
BUT,
I can see on the Norwegian price list that all models have it (=Kjørevarmer ) as standard (=cold country).
UK must also be a hot country in this context.

Idea OK, so britts and I should install the extra heater.

But I have doubts whether there is space in the engine room. Some who know something about this possible space-problem?
Some who know something about this ?
Arrow It may be something our sponsor can answer. Question

Yepp - we do have an Auxillary Heater fitted as standard (in Norway) but I dont understand what that has to do with a Booster Heater or the Parking Heater that you mention you want but cant fit beacuse you dont have the Auxillary Heater Confused Confused
In any case we still have not had a P011 recall for pulling Fuse #16 = PCT Heater (presumably Booster Heater Question )

To be quite honest I dont know what the function of all these heaters is because it tells me F Censored all in the UK and Swedish Freelander Handbooks I have - thanks to good old LR Thumbs Up 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

English is not my native language, and technical terms can be "Russian" for me.
I understand that BOOSTER heater is the basic heater all cars have, and auxiliary heater is an additional heater the factory installs on demand (if you have the money or live in Norway).
If we say no to this factory-installed extra heater, we can afterwards insert a Webasto - That's what I want,
....and so I ask if anyone has experience, knowledge or thoughts on such installation in the engine room.

Idea AndyC, I suppose that Auxiliary heater in this connection is called Parking heater because it is programmed to warm up the car in the parking lot. Question

Big Cry I have the text from a German web site, so there may be confusion in terms. LR Freelander2 2,2 Td4 HSE manuel Stornaway Grey (Metallic) & Ebony Black Leather & Sun/Moon-roof & Bi-Xenon & Roof Rails & Tow bar & Body side rubbing strips & Cold climate pack & Privacy glass & NavTeq . OK - understand you Bjartin - I was getting pretty confused as well and looking at the handbooks didnt help me any. I did mention PCT Heater - that should have been PTC Heater which is also Russian to me Embarassed But must be the Booster Heater Confused (F16 pull - Recall P011 etc.)

Still if the Auxillary Heater (fitted as standard in Norway) which is also known as the Parking Heater I wonder how it works Confused In the handbook it just says "operates at low ambiant temperatures" and that it is "fully automatic" and that "operating exhaust fumes may be visible exciting from the front underside" Shocked If that is a Parking Heater it maybe dosent work until the engine is turned on Question 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

The PTC heater is inside the car. I would have thought that a "booster heater" was on the engine somewhere Question

The fuel fired booster heater is an option in the UK, can't see it being necessary, especially with fuel being expensive.

Details of booster heater uploaded into my gallery if anyone wants them

Thank you Chris. It was a thorough documentation regarding 2009MY.
I will check if I can get it installed in my 2007MY as an alternative to the Webasto heater. LR Freelander2 2,2 Td4 HSE manuel Stornaway Grey (Metallic) & Ebony Black Leather & Sun/Moon-roof & Bi-Xenon & Roof Rails & Tow bar & Body side rubbing strips & Cold climate pack & Privacy glass & NavTeq . Bjartin & Andy, the auxillary heater (fuel driven) heats the cooling water to achieve a quicker warming-up of the engine and to assist heating function in cold weather. The auxillary heater can be upgraded to a "parking heater" like WEBASTO at relatively little money. The auxillary heater will be active around 5°C.

The "booster" heater is a simple electrical heating device placed in front of the air blower to assist the interieur heating. No more. The booster heater is active at a selected temperature between outside temperature and (wanted) inside temperature.

Hope that this will help.

YF,
what do you think is the best of these two options:
1: install auxillary heater, and upgrade it (with a timer, etc.)
2: Webasto heater (or another brand).

Thanks YF and chris8of9 for the info, however there seems to be some mix-up for the different heater names

Surely the Fuel Fired Booster Heater (chris8of9 info) is the (fully automatic) Auxiliary Heater which is fitted as standard in cold climate vehicles and is referred to in the Handbook - also what YF is referring to ?

If so, I guess that the electrical Booster Heater YF is referring to is the the PTC Heater (regarding Recall P011 for removing the PTC Heater fuse) 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Andy, thank you for the clarification. You are of course right.
Bjartin, upgrading the fuel driven pre heater to a parking heater may be a good idea, however, if you choose WEBASTO for example, they may not be able to up-grade your system, but to install a complete new parking heater. Check with other parking heater manufacturers, if they can use (are willing to use) the Landrover pre heater, and to upgrade this system with timer driven start and stop. This option will be much less in cost. But you may loose the Landrover warranty for this unit.

I looked into this and had the following conclusions :

1) if cost is the deciding factor - then an electric heater (engine, or engine + cabin) was far cheaper compared to a diesel burning heater (but limited to having an available electric supply of course !). So, you can be sure to heat it in the morning before going to work at least, by using your home electricity supply.

2) I could save money by installing the electric heater myself (it's reasonably simple). The diesel heater is more complicated to fit, including a fuel line etc.

3) I would not get either the electric or diesel heater fitted by the LR Dealer - way too expensive. I would use a company that specialises in fitting aftermarket heaters.

No to an electric heater (DEFA ). I shall have hot car when I'm in the mountains and nature, and there are not many electrical sockets available. LR Freelander2 2,2 Td4 HSE manuel Stornaway Grey (Metallic) & Ebony Black Leather & Sun/Moon-roof & Bi-Xenon & Roof Rails & Tow bar & Body side rubbing strips & Cold climate pack & Privacy glass & NavTeq . I've been in touch with 2 LR dealers in Norway and the auxiliary heater that is installed here is a Webasto parking heater that has been modified to work as a auxiliary heater. It's possible to buy a conversion kit to also make it work as a parking heater. One dealer say's it's working well but the other told me that they had problems with error messages since the auxiliary heater is so closely integrated with the electronics of the car.
I'm going to contact LR Norway to get their opinon
