3 = the fact that we all get tempted to get the power wash out and spray the engine bay (used car prep as well). Water gets into places it should not and they need re-lubricating, better than WD40 is the spray the mountain bikers use IMO with the added bits.

Thanks for the great guide. I've recently bought a 2007 FL2 XS, 128500 miles, full service history....rev related while and heavy steering at low speeds.

On early vehicles there was an issue with the steering racks. During manufacture weld spatter was left inside which could come loose . Coupled with the mesh size on the reservoir this could lead to blockage and eventual failure of the rack. I believe this was sorted out by 2010. We had the rack, reservoir and pump replaced for 50% of cost as a gesture from LR when the car was 4 years old and under 40000 miles. At standstill the steering was ultra heavy. If you go back through this thread you should find chapter and verse. My gut feel is on a 2008 vehicle it is the rack. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Thanks Martin, even if they bench tested the Rack and it came up with no issue, could it still be the Rack ? |

Well if you have a new pump and the reservoir is Ok , there is only the rack left. I must admit I have no idea what a " bench test" would involve, but I'm sure a more qualified member will be along in a moment . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

The reservoir is not a deal breaker on cost, fit one (later modified) and rule it out. Oil is LR specific as well. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Front suspension is Macpherson struts. Strut top bearing has been known to seize on other models with similar suspension. Failing that, lower ball joints & track rod ends. Nothing else in the system!

Are they using the correct power steering oil ? Thinking outside the box if oil is too thick it may make for heavy steering. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years FL2 MY13 TD4 GS Current |

Great thread hopefully it will help with my problem to be solved successfully, I am asking as today I started the car travelled about 4 miles when I heard a whining coming from the car as got further down the road the steering became quite hard, right away I thought power steering, once I had pulled into a parking space I lifted the bonnet to find the power steering fluid was at the minimum.
