England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 S Manual Indus Silver
Smoking on start up

Hi I have notice white smoke only on start up,the smoke goes as soon as I set of.i had this before with valve stem oil seals.
Any idea,s.

Could be just general wear and tear if our vehicle is higher miles.

Badly worn valve stem and or valve stem oil seals will show up after descending a hill in a low gear when you then accelerate, lots of smoke.

If only at start up it could well be that your heater plugs need renewing. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

+1 for heater plugs. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

I would try to run a few tanks with a good known diesel treatment/injector cleaner additives.

White smoke is unburnt diesel. Check your glow plugs.
Good glow plugs should show a low resistance when checked with a multi meter.
Disconnect each plug in turn (ignition off).
Set the meter to ohms and check between the tip of the plug and its body lower down.leave the plugs in place, no need to remove.
Should be about 1 or 2 ohms or lower depending on the car and make of plug. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Agree (as above). Unfortunately the plugs on the FL2 are not easy to access. Several threads on here if you do a search. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

If you suspect the glow plugs, just go the whole log and replace them. They are cheap but the access is tight and require removal of the inlet manifold. This is for measuring with a multimeter to. So when first in there, replace them to remove any doubt about their condition. Similar threads point out that that they wear out as the years gone by. 3 of 4 was completely dead on mine. Remember to buy the inlet manifold gaskets before starting the job as these might have seen better days to (mine was deformed and leaked). Replacing the diesel filter is also nice to do as it has to be removed anyway during the job, and the same applies to blanking the EGR if you consider that (made a huge difference to mine). Clean up the throttle body and check the condition of the swirl flaps in the same go.
