Timing Belt Renewal

I am posting this thread as the links may hopefully help others in future Thumbs Up

I have planned to change my timing belt since I bought the car back in December
2014 the car had done 90k.
I researched the job and started to get the parts together some weeks ago.
I decided to go for a Gates timing kit complete with water pump. There are quite a few
quality manufacturers offering similar kits.
I also purchased a Gates auxillary belt
Here is link to Gates web site
http://www.gatesautocat.com/drive/LANDROVE...0-14/17708
(Amazing the number of cars we share the same engine with!)
Kit part number KP25633 XS (timing belt, Tensioner, Pulley and Water Pump)
Auxillary Belt 6PK1745.
I had read various manufacturers being fitted to Freelanders.
I choose Gates because as an Engineer I have known their reputation in belts and
drive systems and they have been in business since early 1900's (I am not connected
or related to anyone at Gates)
Once I started working, I was delighted to discoverer my original belt was a Gates Smile
Although looking shiney and some slight cracks, it had stood the test of 103k and 7 years.
The Water pump was a little ropey to operate when I removed it and had some evidence of corrosion near the shaft seal.
The pulleys seemed ok, but were also replaced.
The job is quite easy but very very time consuming as you need to repeat the timing
process a few times.
The most difficult part for me was removing/refitting the starter motor, I thought the access
was very limited despite the air filter and trunking been removed.
Total cost
KP25633 XS = £92.00 (complete kit inc. pump)
6PK1745 = £18.00 (auxillary belt)
Crankshaft Pulley Bolt (LR000645) = £3.98 (recommend new bolt)
Timing tool kit (available to anyone who would like to borrow)

It may be possible to source the parts a little cheaper via Amazon or similar.
In addition you will need to replenish your cooling system
I did at home on drive.
I took approx. 5 hours to complete but I was distracted a few times and I cleaned everything as I worked.
Here is a useful video link (the kit is a Dayco)

I would recommend anyone at 100k + to think about renewal.
If I can offer any help, please ask.

lol, you would never pay me when you see how much tea I drink.

Seriously, it is not a job that everyone feels comfy with and it is only a few hundred quid to get done at an indie.
My main concern was I fitted parts that were original specification and not some motor factor equivalent.
I can relax for next 100k (peace of mind?) Very Happy

That seems like "a walk in the park". I have done DIY timing belt changes which was a lot more complicated than that!! You even did not need to remove the engine mount for access, or need any special tools!! Luxury!! Min was replaced by the previous owner a 3 years back, so no need to have that in my plans at the moment....

It is recommended to use a new bolt as the old one will have it's threads stretched. Shocked

There is a certain amount of tightening/loosening of the bolt if you follow the official belt tensioning procedure. Do all this with the old bolt & dont use the new one until the final fit (as per The LR manual). 1978 Laverda Jota. Stolen...

Well we managed to get the belt & tensioner pulley etc fitted today but not without a bit of drama, the starter motor negative pole was weak and snapped off flush, so we had to take it to a refurbishing place, it will be back with us tomorrow when we can fit it back on and start the engine hopefully.

The kit actually came with a new crank pulley bolt we found out when we opened the box, I was informed though that the bolt is not s stretch bolt, and could be reused if new Loctite was added,

The belts I took off looked to be ok the writing was still very visible, gates also the auxiliary belt was Dayco, the tensioner some Chinese make, water pump looked new but had the plastic impeller, not the metal one which the new gates kit as so I suppose I could have left it but now I know for certain when they have been done.

Hopefully all goes well tomorrow, most of the work is remove all the gumph to get to the belt cheers Arctic.
