Had the SD4 for nearly 2 months now and as it's our only vehicle it got us thinking about the mileage the wife piles on using it as a runaround. Bearing in mind we don't use the Freely for commuting we estimate we'll still cover nearly 10k a year, Her daughters house is a 40 mile round trip and her other friends live 30-35 miles away. So in 5 years we'd be approaching 100k on the clock.
Anyway today we made a bit of a spur of the moment purchase and bought a used Peugeot 107 (£1500). We can tax and insure it for £25/month which is easily covered by savings in diesel.
The main advantage is slowing down the depreciation of our HSE and also the fact she won't take the Freely for granted when she does drive it.
I do about 400-500 miles/week in a company Prius taxi and can go days without driving the Freelander but get a real sense of appreciation weekends when I do get to press that start button. Current: MY11 SD4 HSE / Sterling Quartz 2010 caravan

In 5 years time your HSE will be 11 years old. At that age, I don't think approaching 100k on the clock will be anything out of the ordinary. I would imagine the main thing that is going to affect the value on your car in 5 years time is whether or not you have had the 10 year service carried out.

Personally, if I were buying an 11 year old car that had been out of production for 6 years, I'd rather have one that's done 100k and had the 10 year service than buy one with 80k on the clock that hadn't. Anyway, I think that in 5 years time an old, 'dirty' diesel vehicle will have very little value judging by the way things are going now!

My guess is running another car will cost you far more than any savings of depreciation on the first car by driving it less. You also have to factor in the depreciation of the second, as this is dead money as well.

IMHO No such thing as beating depreciation. Once an everyday commodity car is 10 years old you're into " Bangernomics" it's worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. I'd have kept the £1500 towards the day it needs a Diff  2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

I hope it works out for you. However, if I've got a decent car, I'm happier to be using it! Especially when it means that my family can travel in something that's properly crashworthy

It might seem a bit savage to put 30,000 plus miles a year on a new D4 but, 10 years later it'll still be relatively worthless, whether it's got either 200,000 or 300,000 miles on it. But, at least this way, I can get full VFM out of it and only have to maintain the one car.

Agree, my first car was a Peugeot 504, very comfortable and nice to be in till the day I got rid of it. I don't need a Freelander, any other 4WD would do for the holidays I am planning, but a bit of luxury is nice. Also got a petrol engine, 177kW is nice, couldn't be stuffed saving a few dollars on cheaper diesel. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
