2013 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Orkney Grey
turbo problem!!!!

I'm a new member on here
I Have a freelander 2 2013 manual diesel

my mechanic found oil in the breather pipe, now he tells me there is a very small oil leak inside the turbo.
he say its not a panic but at some point it will need to be changed!

I had car from new and has only done 32000, seems mad to me, do freelanders have problems in the area?

Warning lights

My 2013 auto with 31400 miles gave me a red light on Monday on the way home from the LR dealer! First a red light with the "reduced performance" message. By the time I had found somewhere to stop I had an amber light as well. Having switched off the engine, read the book! and caller the dealer he suggest that it might go away when I started up again and sure enoug it had.
Went home, just couple of miles, and booked it in for a check, earliest they could do was Friday. That is when they said the turbo needed replacing. As I don't have extended warranty this is looking at near £3k to fix. Having told them I am not at all happy they promised to talk to LR. I am still waiting for their response.
What really pi**es me off is that I was at the dealer on Monday to place and order for a new Disco. I now feel like cancelling and going to look at BMW X5 and Volvo XC90.
I tow my 'van all around Europe and don't want problems like this in Slovenia. I told them I have booked to take the 'van off on 2 April but they have said not to tow until it is fixed. Sad GONE - '07 TD4 GS manual Zermatt Silver

i don't go to LR anymore, my local garage said a LR turbo would £1300 or a copy £700 plus labour.
He said there no panic yet as I don't have any warning lights etc, but I think I would go for the copy part as the LR part wasn't very good to start with.
Also he told me the engine in our freelanders is a Peugeot not a LR unit.

The 2.2 engine is an ancient Ford/PSA unit made in Bridgend hence the move to Ingenium. I had a Peugeot 406 20 years ago with this engine! Oil change every 6k - its the oil that has improved, not the engine. The turbo on that was still fine at 120k miles. GONE - '07 TD4 GS manual Zermatt Silver

The recommended oil is Castrol Magnatec 5W 30 A5. Ford spec 913C.
Don't rush to change the turbo. The intake pipwork will always have an oil mist from the crankcase ventilation, which can accumulate at the turbo, so it may not be the turbo at fault. Don't lose faith in your Freelander. This model is the most reliable LR have ever made & the turbos are no worse than on any other car with a turbo. My '08 went to 103,000 before I sold it on its original turbo. My present one is on 76,000 without problem. Oil consumption on both was/is minimal with no top ups between oil changes. If your consumption starts getting bad, then maybe your turbo seals are on their way out. If so it will be cheaper to get it refurbished, not replaced..
