I took my 2007 manual TD4 for a service and timing belt, but I have a of problem oil in the air intake box that much that it ran out when tilted and there is also oil down the back of the engine, Been told its the turbo and a large cost to sort. There has been no error codes, problems in starting or smoke etc. Just wondered if this is normal.

Has anyone got any advice on the best way forward reconditioned turbo etc. Has anyone had experience with this issue and know where the best place is to source the turbo or have the work done. I am in Nottingham and the car is still driving ok. Many thanks.

I believe it's normal on the Freelander 2 as mine is the same, I have oil down the rear of the engine coming from the top air pipe joint.

Thanks for the reply, hope just wondered what sort of mileage has your car done and how many miles have you done since you first noticed it, finally is there a noticeable drop in oil level and is your car smoking at all.

1, 71000
2, Oil normal for a diesel, ie it does use oil but only 1/2 lt a year (6000 mile)
3, No smoke.
4, don't know done it for a year or two but now planning on cleaning and resealing it this summer.

there will be some oil in the ducting downstream of where the crankcase joins but not in the airbox? Mine is certainly dry. Shouldn't be any oil externally either unless you have a leak in the ducting etc. 1978 Laverda Jota. Stolen...

If there's lots of external oil check the gaskets on the oil feed pipe and the oil drain pipe

There is some seepage around the top of the crankcase around the back of the organ pipe looking pipe and then oil in the hard plastic ducting down to the from there. The air filter box itself is dry and the filter was just dirty and I have had replaced as part of the service. I don't know whether the leaking and surplus oil is normal or if I need a new turbo.

Oily air vented from the engine is passed back into the air inlet pipe via the PCV, (you can't miss it, its the connecting pipe that sits between the organ pipes and the air filter). From there onwards your air inlet pipe is probably oily, the oil collects at the joint, seeps out and drains down the back of the engine. You can fix the leak with a large jubilee clip instead of the standard clamp. Its quite common.

Can't say you haven't got turbo problems, but it sounds like the above.

I don't see how it could be a turbo problem as the air is going all in one direction, away from the air box. My ignorance of things mechanical may be an issue in my logic.

Once the oil seal and bearing goes in a turbo oil will get into all sorts of places it shouldn't.
all I would advise is don't ignore what the garage has said investigate it further don't ignore it and hope it goes away, iv seen a discovery engine with total turbo failure, it destroyed itself in minutes, the owner tried everything to stop the engine but couldn't he stood there with the ignition key in his hand and watched it destroy itself.
