Freelander 2 08 HSE

I'm mounting the base unit of my ham radio in the space in the spare wheel area. I need to provide a 12V supply for the unit - no more than 5 amps. Doesn't matter if it's via the ignition circuit or 'straight'.

Something which may have no relevance to this but I will shortly be having a tow-bar fitted - so the power for that is probably spoken for!

Any ideas please?

Hi David, there is a fuse box next to the spare, in the load area, you could take power from there.

Would always recommend direct take off from the battery via isolating switches on both pos and neg line as well as fuses on pos and neg near the battery .

Have also posted setup I use on RAYNET via double 12v batteries with Anderson powerpole distribution box

Depending an type of amateur radio vhf/ uhf /Hf and if it has remote head have to be aware of rf pickup/ near dashboarond.
With you stating mounting in the boot spare wheel area presume remote head unit and only vhf/ uhf .

If useing 12 v source in rear fuse box be careful on routing coax away to save induceing R/F into electronics .
Can be done but needs carefu5 planning and routing on head unit control cable and coax cable and power cable .
Last of all position of antenna mount ...

You are quite right - VHF/UHF only. Rig is Yaesu FT7800. The connection to the head unit is via what appears to be a 'flat' CAT 5 cable - although you'd hope otherwise, I bet it's NOT screened so your comments about picking up spurious RF are most certainly valid.

I also take on board your notes about 12V supply - there are already double fuses in the supply cable I currently use. I wonder if i could pick up a supply from the rear fuse box before it goes through the fuse unit (rather than via a spare fuse in the box). I know that the rear fuse board is fused in the engine fuse board, so there would be 'double' protection.
