A low cooling warning has appeared on my car however after checking the coolant level I discovered the coolant does not require topping up.

After some research on the net I think I may have identified the problem which is reported to be a faulty float within the coolant reservoir. The float may have become saturated over time and sunk thus giving the incorrect report of low coolant levels.

Has any body else had this problem and is the only way to fix this by replacing the expansion tank/reservoir?

The notification appears on the dashboard every 30 seconds or so and is a bit annoying! Itd be great to get this problem resolved and Id appreciate any help or advice as always.

You could try unplugging the sensor at the header and reconnecting it just in case its just a mucky connection first??

2008 lr2 petrol 3.2l i6 auto. Coolant level was low in overflow tank which triggered the low coolant level light. Fixed the hose that was leaking. Coolant back up to max. Low coolant message doesn't go off.

Assuming the sensor is now bad I replaced with a brand-new OEM low coolant level sensor.

Low coolant message still there.

Just installed a second Land Rover OEM coolant level sensor and the low coolant message is still there.

Tried disconnecting battery and touching the two cables together for 30 minutes to reset the ECM.

Still low coolant message.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you say "at the header" in the states that's equivalent to an exhaust manifold. Do you mean unplug the sensor and re seat the connector? If so I've definitely done that many many times lol.

Tubolove, he means header as in header tank, or reservoir. Beats me how exhaust manifolds become headers when they cross the pond anyway! 😉

I have the same on my 07SE - it appeared after my indy had replaced the coolant at the 120,000 service but it does not appear at every start.
I checked the level in the header tank and all normal - once the weather warms up I will check the float and sensor - I am confident nothing sinister is present as we have just made a 900 mile return trip to the Alps - 38.2 mpg for the runs sitting at 2,250rpm (75-78mph) on the excellent french auto routes Tattoos - Why would you choose to look like the wall of a public toilet?

Reseated the connection and checked wiring. No issues I can determine there. Sensor is for the second time firmly seated in the header.

So...on that note... back to the original question. Does a dealer have to clear this message or can it be done another way?

No, the message should clear by itself once the coolant level is OK.
Disconnect the connector and short circuit with a piece of wire the two pins on the connector.
Leaving the short circuit there, see if the message goes away.
If not, check the wiring. One pin goes to ground and another to the CJB.

"Low Coolant Level" warning but no loss of coolant. This had been going on for a while, intermittent.

Not a bad idea to reach down and disconnect and re-connect the coolant sensor wire connector at the bottom of the reservior a few times, might just be corroded.

Might also be the electrical sensor itself, which can be easily replaced without draining the coolant reservoir.

But probably not, apparently the usual cause is the sensor float which is inside the reservoir and cannot be replaced separately. Good news is the reservoir is pretty cheap, like under $40, and not too hard to replace.

I didn't have any spare coolant, so I used a big syringe to suck out as much as I could so I didn't waste too much. Just topped it up with a little distilled water, a little of that won't dilute the coolant too much.

Move the power steering and windshield washer reservoirs over to the drivers side as far as they go.

Unbolt the coolant reservoir (one bolt). Pull it up a lttle bit (gently) for access.

Carefully squeeze the two upper coolant tube fittings and disconnect them, move them aside gently.

Squeeze and disconnect the sensor wire on the bottom. Pull the reservoir up some more, you can move the bottom hose to allow more access. Squeeze and slide the clamp down the hose, remove the hose. You'll lose some coolant here.

Install is the reverse. Lube the small tube fittings with coolant so they slide in easy. Rinse off the area when you're done, coolant won't evaporate and will mess up electrical stuff.

I initially filled the res up to below the min, and started the car to verify the low warning worked. Then filled to max, did a test drive to get it hot and checked for leaks.

*** Somebody on amazon is selling the wrong reservoir for the LR2! It looks exactly like the right one but the coolant outlet on the bottom is pointed the wrong way! Ask me how I know....

The correct res has an outlet which points towards the rear (the end with the fill cap). The bogus one has a port which points forward (away from the cap). I think it's for a volvo or an Evoque or something.
