Tucson 4x4 Off Road Performance

Just a quick post to say I am really impressed with the 4x4 'off road' performance of the Tucson.

For the past few weeks I have been visiting a lot of farms carrying out TB testing on cattle. Hence I have been up and down muddy farm tracks, across fields and with all the rain of late, generally up to my ears in mud. Also doing my regular role involves me visiting many farms and driving through fords and mud, slurry etc etc. The Tucson has been faultless.

One of my colleagues drives an Isuzu 4x4 pick up and most of the farmers use Land Rover 4x4's of various vintages. Twice now I have ended up towing both the Isuzu and Land Rovers out of the mud when the have got stuck and 'dug' themselves in, sometimes upto the axles.

For some reason the Tucson doesn't seem to bog itself in but just keeps going. Even with the standard summer road tyres fitted it provides a lot of traction yet doesn't bog itself in.

Impressive stuff!

My only criticism of the vehicle 'off road' is that the hill decent control is rather 'slow' in comparison to other vehicles fitted with this sort of system but it is a minor complaint really.

That's impressive! Do you have a manual or auto box and what size wheels are fitted?

Just think what you could do with a set of M+S tyres!

Thats good to hear Pete cheers, do you switch on the 4x4 or do you let it do its own thing. I used Hill decent a lot in other cars and found them on a icy hill a bit too fast so slow is good for me don't know if the Tucson does it but some hill decent controls you can vary the speed using the cruise control up/ down speed controller.

Hi Richard,

It is the 2.0 (185PS) SE Nav with the auto box and on 17 inch wheels.

Yes M&S tyres would be good, but there could probably be a 'compromise' in its 'on road' ability.

I managed to get a spare set of 17 inch wheels from a written off Tucson and got new Michelin Alpin tyres fitted to them so am all prepared for winter though. I will get them put on in the autumn no doubt.

Hi Ian,

I generally let it do its own thing with the '4x4 auto on' when it needs it, However in the deep mud and when I was towing the others out of the mud I switched the 4x4 on manually.

I think there is only one speed in the hill descent control. As you say it maybe fast on ice etc but off road in steep fields etc it seemed a little slow.

Cheers Pete its reassuring to know and made me smile thinking of the Tucson pulling the others out. With an automatic gear box if you put it first gear manually would you need the hill decent control could you just use the ABS brakes to control speed. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

On the Freelander 2 the hill decent speed is adjustable from the +- buttons on the steering wheel and i am guessing it is adjustable on the Tucson to.

It's clear now that March is upon us that 3 yr old cars are coming on the market and so in the next couple of weeks there should be a fair few to choose from.

My shortlist at present (all autos)
Hyundai Tucson
Mazda CX5
VW Toureg
Mitsubishi Outlander (diesel)
and very possibly another Freelander 2 (despite my family's advice to the contrary)

All of the far east cars have 5 yr warranty and are a lot cheaper than a LR.
I have seen various comments on most of these but not much on the Mazda CX5, anyone anything to add? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I had a look at the Mazda last year, to be honest I thought it was a bit of a toy. Very lightweight. About as far away from a 3litre diesel Touareg as you can get. That particular vehicle, the Touareg is awesome. VW were selling them off 3 years ago with monsterous discounts, so there should be some good deals available, Q7 size and performance at VDub money  2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

2023 Toyota Hilux invincible X 2.8 Auto .

A girl at work has the CX5. She loves it. She had one or two problems in the first 2 years of ownership and parts seemed to take an age to get in (1-2 weeks). Not the nicest looking car in my opinion but seems to get good reviews. My choice on your list would be the new Touareg or the Outlander. The new shape Touareg is a little smaller than the old one which suits it.
