which satnav for Freelander GS?

Hi. Just bought a freelander GS automatic with no satnav (previously had manual Freelander SE Tech but had to replace due to knee problems). Anyone recommend a satnav and where to position it? thanks.

I use a Garmin Nuvi 2548 with traffic and lifelong map and software updates. Got it from Halfords when on special offer. I mount it in the centre of the windscreen as low as possible, using the front 12V socket to power it. Seems to do the job well enough at a sensible price. 12MY 61plate FL2 TD4 auto GS Orkney Grey Roof spoiler full size spare

Hi BarryKey. many thanks for the fast reply. This looks sensible. I will also go to Halfords and have a look at this.

You can install an aftermarket sat nav where the oem one normally sits.
The forum favourite is the Tom Tom Start 60
There is a complete forum thread that guides you in doing this conversion.
Here is mine fitted to my GS.
FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.

many thanks for this. I saw the threads on this. This area is where my phone, radio settings are displayed on a small (2 by3 inch) screen, so I have assumed that I can't use this for a retrofit?

Also forgot to say I purchased the US maps for mine as I had an issue with a rental one which would not remain connected in the car. There is enough storage for it. When I go to the States now I take it then I know it works and it was cheaper for the maps for ever use than one upgrade on the rental. Works fine over there too. 12MY 61plate FL2 TD4 auto GS Orkney Grey Roof spoiler full size spare

the picture above is or 2006-2010 models with the cubby hole space or sat nav screen, and completely separate stereo unit

late 2012 - 2015 cars have either a small screen for stereo unit information and basic car info or sat nav screen with more car config functions.

the 2012 --> models are pretty big job to upgrade the screens so the OP will really have the option for a Garmin or similar stuck in a holder

I assumed as the OP asked the question as to where to site a [recommended] Sat Nav, that there were options available.
However as the OP has since advised there is already a small unit in the cubby space then the obvious answer would be the windscreen ....... so why ask in the first instance?

Confused FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

I have a TomTom Go600 and find it really good.

I took out the rubber mat in the space where the fitted satnav goes and made a plate out of aluminium sheet to fit the space to provide a flat horizontal surface (took a little fiddling and bending to get it just right) and fixed this in with double sided sticky tape. Then I glued one of the flat plastic discs that come with satnavs on to the plate. The satnav bracket thingy that sticks to the windscreen sits on the disc. It works very well and brings the satnav down to the right level which aslo has the advantage of not obscuring the windscreen plus I can angle it to suit me. The only disadvantage is that it is advisable to take the satnav off and put it out of sight when parked.

Has anyone attempted to repair the factory fitted Denso sat Nav disc drive located underneath the drivers seat? I believe the disc loader mechanism needs changing on my disc drive......
