On another note there is a good thread by 'divewally' on how to remove the fuel tank and sender units and do the hard wire repair.
Whant to give it a go but its 0 deg. outside at the moment. Neutral Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

IME the stop start needs the battery to be at pretty much full charge. It also depends on the drain on the battery like A/C and other ancillaries running. It not working occasionally is not indicative of a failing battery. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Understand what you are saying but the battery is over 7 years old.
Anyway, replacement battery arrived this morning. Now fitted. Old battery pushed to back of garage, to be checked when time allowed.
Haven't had a chance to take it for a run yet. Still worried about the fuel senders though and the possibility of a breakdown. Sad

As for battery life...........replaced the original battery on my son's 2001 Renault Clio 1.5 DCI back end of last year. Very Happy
That's pretty good by any standard. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

Yeah, I believe my battery is the original from November 2009. A good long run gets the ECO working again but I occasionally put it on an Optimate to give it a full charge as well. A new battery is probably good for peace of mind. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Just a bit of an update and rant !
As this is a known issue, thought I'd give LRCS an email, at least for some advice.
DIDN'T EVEN DO ME THE CURTSEY OF A REPLY.
So Censored them.

Going to get hold of the bits that require replacement on re-assembly , like the sender 'o' ring and propshaft bolts and do the job myself.

Only have three issues.

1. Don't know how much fuel is in the tank , weight wise.
2. How do I drain the tank to reduse the weight.
3. Its very cold outside and I don't have a nice warm workshop like Edd China.

On the plus side 'Divewally' has posted a very good ' how to' guide. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

In case anyone is interested I have decided to tackle the problem as the weather is better.
Followed Divewalleys post for help but mine was more of a struggle than his. Took me an age to get the bolts out of the prop shaft at the dif end due to lack of access for the top two and the fact that they are pre coated with thread lock. I did as suggested and cracked them before putting the car on the ramps but they just would not come out. I eventually managed using an air ratchet as this allowed me to run them in and out several times each until they slackened off.
Then the prop shaft would not separate. Therefore put a 12mm bolt 20mm long into one of the unthreaded holes on the rear of the coupling and bridged that with two of the re-enforcing plates previously removed and two 13mm bolts 25mm long. As you screw the threaded bolts in the plates push on the middle bolt in the plain hole and push the propshaft out of the coupling.

I was concerned about the weight of the tank as I estimated there would be over 20 ltr. still in the tank. But after disconnecting the fuel line it just syphoned out into a couple of fuel cans.
Also the filler pipe wouldn't just pull off, this had to be carefully prised off.
Purchased the special tool from eBay to remove the locking ring on the tank and the rest is as Divewalley states. Repair to the wiring now done.

Haven't put it back yet as I've taken the opportunity to clean up some of the rust.

Hope this works as I'm knackered. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

Anyway all put back together and appears to be OK.
As I refilled the tank with some diesel the gauge responded accordingly. Before it would not register anything below half a tank. Very Happy

One thing to mention, a lot has been said about how difficult it is to prime the fuel system again. What Rubbish .
I disconnected the inlet to the fuel filter and connected a small piece of tube and an appropriate size funnel to the pipe. Gently filled it with a small amount of clean diesel , reconnected to filter and started the engine first time.
Engine runs fine, no issues. Thumbs Up

Have been for a couple of runs in motor, all appears well. One happy gasman.
