The batteries come with a long warranty, normally 8 years. This can be extended with a free (Toyota) health check. You can replace the dead cells if they fail which is apparently not expensive. As there are no belts, clutches, turbos to fail repairs should be a lot less than your average diesel.

I expect old batteries are recycled.

Even so, I wonder how the resale values will hold up. People are going to worry about their batteries dying, and of course the technology is likely to become outdated. That said, the older Prius seem to be soldiering on, and of course if the battery starts to die they still have a petrol engine. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

My limited understanding is that a hydrogen fuell cell combines hydrogen and oxygen (presuminably from the air) and generates electricity for an electrc motor and water.
It all sounds rather good but although hydogen can be generated in huge amounts from water hydrolysis using electrcity from eco-sources - hydroelectric, geothermal etc, hydrogen is not easy to transfer in large amounts.
Normal cylinders contain gaseous hydrogen and contain not very much compared with that if liquid fuel is used. Unfortunately hydrogen needs to be cooled below its critical temp of -253 C in order to compress it in a cylinder to its liquid form. This means you need cooling and insulation which adds a lot of weight compared to that of the vehicle.

As an example hospitals store liquid oxygen in these and they only need to be cooled down to -118 C (-150 to be on the safe side)


So it seems to me that range may well be a problem for the fuel cell car too. Jules

lpg is much easier to store then hydrogen, Ive been bulk storing it for 25 years with no real problems

it stores and fills as a liquid only gassing off at the engine. hydrogen needs to be super cold to do this

I have an 8 year warranty on the my batteries so that takes care of that

I got an £8400 discount new and £6400 tax rebate through my business so it was cheaper to buy PHEV new than used - I will either change after couple of years as normal or if I find it's worth nothing run it for the 5 year full - 8 year battery warranty period - worst case I keep it as a second car for swmbo even if the EV battery range is reduced it will still be a useable hybrid

You get a 13a 3 pin plug slow charger (5hr) with the vehicle and can now claim a free dedicated fast charger (3.5hr) from chargemaster

I got a free dedicated fast charger from a friend - at the time I got mine you had to pay for them

A bit like me fastening a 2 inch water hose from a bulk storage tank to the farm crop sprayer then forgetting and driving off, wrecking the hose and spilling 4000 gallons of water down the yard . i At work
