Loud Clunk on Left Hand Side

Hi Peeps

Enjoying my Freely as ever, just one thing spoiling at present. Last week I noticed a clunk or thump coming from the left hand side rear as if something was rolling about in the boot. I did have a few tools and boxes in there so thought nothing of it.

Anyway last Thursday I removed all chattles from the boot area and checked under the load cover in the wheel well, all secure. Took it for a test and the noise is still there. I can induce it by waggling the steering wheel whilst moving, it sounds as though something is loose on the suspension and is hitting the body somewhere.

I have had it up on stands and all link arms, suspension, hub nuts, brake caliper all tight and no play, same on the RHS. Nothing appears to be loose at all. I took it for another run with the passenger windows down and it seems much louder/severe.

A bit stuck now really, any thoughts? 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

Thanks YB, I did see that thread from a search. Both seem inconclusive as MRRover75 has yet to fit his new shockers. I am not wanting to contemplate the transfer box Surprised 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

Not on the landy but on one of my other cars I had a clonk which I thought was the back suspension. Turned out to be a broken hangar on the exhaust near the front. Must have transmitted the noise to make it appear to come from the back. FL2 Metropolis, Loire Blue, ebony/ivory

Good way to check it's transfer box is to remove the fuse of the haldex, you will run in front wheel drive only and relieve all the load down the prop/rear diff. If clonk goes away you know it's drivetrain related. www.bellengineering.co.uk

I took the fuse out for the Haldex and no difference, so at least, it appears, it's not the transfer box. Thanks austen. 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

Take the rear wheel off and check the hand brake shoes, just had dramas with mine as a retaining pin had snapped allowing the shoe to knock about in the brake disc, strangely enough sounds like somebody is locked in your boot trying to escape

I checked the handbrake at the weekend, all ok in there. I took the boot trim off to take a look at the top of the shocker mounting. All ok in there too. I am awaiting MRRover75's update after he has changed his rear shockers due to a similar issue as mine. 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)

When my Freelander clunked at the rear it was due to a bad Link control arm ball joint.

After much thought, I decided to eliminate one item from the issue. I disconnected the link arm (as in turboextreme's) from the ARB. Noise gone. So link arm it is! Despite my checking each component, the link arm displayed minute play when I jacked up the hub slightly whilst the car was on the body jack, this must have induced a state of equilibrium with itself and the RHS wheel, therefore no load and the play was evident.

Cheap fix too - happy days and thanks all for the comments, opinions and suggestions. 2010MY 2.2 e4 (gone but, not forgotten)
