over the last few days when its been very cold(-4 etc)when stopped with the engine ticking over I noticed a vapour coming from the front of the car.lifted the lid but could not see exactly where its coming from,next day when cold i checked the coolant bottle,the level was on the max line with no sign of any drops on the drive,i had a similar thing about 10 years ago on my td5 which turned out to be a a porous radiator,any thought much welcome.

Could just be frost/condensation/dampness that builds up overnight on the radiator fins and when the thermostat opens and the rad gets hot, it burns off. I wouldn't worry too much if you are not losing any coolant. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Mine does this often and its really annoying, if its been raining head on or its been washed then its worse, somehow makes steam or misting im guessing from the water that gets traped on the radiator. Almost looks like the steam from car exhausts on a damp morning. Afew times people have pointed at it and my reply is always the same "" its another stupid thing it does "" Freelander 57 plate XS Blue Auto

thanks for the reply,s,it is annoying but as there does not seem to be any coolant loss I will keep a check on it.

Go wash your shirt and rapidly apply heat to dry it. Vapour. Every chance its just overnight collected moisture being expelled.

On the day you see this go check the humidity rating in the weather forecast, my guess its highish. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

and if it was you can turn it inside out for another month.  Common sense isn't very common.

Is it not water blowing in under the bonnet or something?

I don't think the water could get in through the bonnet,it could go through the honeycombe grill when moving though.it did it last week in the freezing fog when parked with engine running after a 10 mile run,i was waiting for swmbo to come out of the doctors so kept it going to keep warm,then noticed the vapour,had a look under the lid but could see nothing wrong,no drips under the car either,temp gauge is normal,fluid in the expansion tank is normal.just seemed odd at the time,but will keep a watch on it.

Check the lower right hand end of the Condenser radiator for the Air conditioning as the Filter Plug fails causing refrigerant to slowly leak out.

The condenser radiator is mounted in front of the Main cooling radiator. If you look througth the grill the first radiator you see is the condenser radiator. The best way to see if the filter plug is leaking is to shine a torch in the lower grill on the bottom right hand end you would see traces of a florescent green liquid if its leaking or weeping.
