United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Stornoway Grey
I have a question.

I have been looking at Freelander 2 HSE's for a family member. I have found 5000 mile, March 2008 '08' HSE TD4 with premium pack privacy glass and auto box, advertised for a few quid short of £27000.

I thought this may be the one for him as it was within budget, but............ at the same place they have an April 2008 HSE i6 with premium pack and privacy glass with 8000 miles on it for £24800!!!!! £2200 less that the TD4!

So the question is this, as he does about 8000 miles a year, and the insurance is only £30 more than the TD4, which would you buy?

OK the TD4 next year will cost £260 to tax compared to the £400 of the i6, but even over 4 years that only eats into £560 of the money he saves over the TD4, It leaves about £400 a year towards his fuel bill.

Personally I think he should buy the i6. What do you think.

i6 economy is approx 18-25mpg average depending on driving style, the TD4 Auto is anywhere from 28 to 35 mpg, petrol is also approx £0.12 a litre cheaper than diesel so another saving. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. With the way residuals are at the moment I think you will find the value of the petrol will drop far quicker than the diesel and both the cars you have listed seem quite dear, if you look on the Landrover site and use their used vehicle locator there is an 08 plate petrol HSE with 5k miles for under £20k.

As has been said you also need to take the residuals into account. A few years on I suspect an I6 will be very hard to shift compared to the td4. Yes, you'll reap the benefits of this now - hence your quandry but it will bite you back in a few years. Over the initial 3 years the saving will probably cover the extra running costs but by year 4, if you keep it that long, you're going to be down on the deal. Then when you sell, the i6 won't be close to the trade in value of the td4. Hence, you'll have spent the same overall but will be left with a car worth considerably less than if you'd bought the td4. Assuming the td4 would be worth 10k at that point, and the i6 perhapd £6k, thats £4k you've lost. 07 Freelander 2 TD4SE Tambora Flame, side steps, privacy glass, mud flaps, boot liner and a tow bar. Ok it's the Wifes but she lets me drive it occasionally - if I've been good!

Interesting view points guys, but residuals later on are not too important. My brother in law who this is for only changes his car when the old one dies!

His current car is a 1992 Frontera Estate 2.4 Petrol and has done 236000 miles and is about knackered, he bought it as a 6 month old ex demo.

He will keep the Freelander until it is dead anyway. On paper, the i6 appears to be better on fuel than his Frontera actually does, he struggles to get over 20mpg any time! Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. i6 is fantastic; the permanent smile will easily outweigh any extra cost/concerns, etc.

TD4

having driven both, for me it was no contest. The flexibility and torque of the TD4, plus lower revs make for much more relaxed driving. The TD4 is also fine in terms of performance and is no slouch. Try em both out! Life is not a dress rehearsal!
