Rear diff drone......

Owned from new 59 plate fl2 with 39000 miles (full LR service history) noise from rear during the past 3 weeks getting louder. I have been advised it's the well known "rear diff" problem!Does anyone know a contact at LR that I might discuss this with?

No, but the 'oracle' on rear diff issue is Austen at Bell Engineering. He supplied me with a replacement here in France, fitted it myself, all tickety-boo... Only dead fish go with the flow

Be sure to check out tyres, rear diff and rear wheel bearings, I have had all three on separate occasions on FL2s and they all sounded the same (although one included the transfer box too). Start with your rear tyres and swap with the front. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

if it's had a full dealer service history I would ask the dealer to discuss with LR for a contribution to repair.

it's a well known common fault and I would imagine they should be happy to help.

there used to be a LR contact on the forum, but I think they gave it up?

There is still a LR contact in the dedicated section, not frequented as often though.

I would get a quote from a dealer as a starting point, without a diagnosis and a price you have no idea what to approach LR with.
The most you are likely to get, imho, is a 50% contribution as a gesture of goodwill.
Then get a price from Austen at Bell engineering and you may well find it is less to pay than the 50%.

Your mileage is right at the point where the majority seem to have problems, a lesson to others that low mileage FL2 models will be storing up problems, higher mileage ones can often be a better option, especially with a good service history of having had these components replaced.

Look through the Land Rover customer relations threads and you will find contacts but get the diagnosis and costs first as they will simply fire you in the direction of a dealer for this info before they will comment on the issue.

Thank you all, that's really helpful feedback - re the tyres it's the second full set of the original make etc. Same tyres all round, been on for about 14000 miles now. I checked out at an independent (Austin Garages near Burton) where I take my FL1 for service, who after test drive thought it was the rear diff. Will check out with Stafford Land Rover (where last scheduled services have been carried out). I did visit the Bell Engineering web site - very informative regarding issues with the rear diff in particular (not that far from where I am). Also assuming worst case scenario has anyone any experience of a freelander diff repair business "freelanderspecialist.com" who offer to rebuild your diff?

Thanks again

I had our rear diff rebuilt by Stonelake near Halifax, all up it was around £800 including labour and VAT with the Haldex oil and filters changed at the same time, guaranteed for 2 years.

however, if you have had the vehicle exclusively serviced by LandRover main dealers , given that it is unreasonable for the diff to fail at such a low mileage you should be able to get them to approach LR on your behalf for a contribution towards the repairs. I've had this twice once a 90 and once on the FL 2 ( steering rack ) and they picked up 50% of the bill even though the cars were out of warranty . Your dealer and LR may proclaim that there is no known problem, but that's there's job of course. They are fully aware of all of the major issues on these cars 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Hi

We fit larger nose bearings to our recon diffs, no one else currently does this. All in fitted with us, including a proper haldex service is £726 with 12 months warranty. I can do it while you wait, will do it on an evening or weekend if that helps. Alternatively for £30 we will post it out to you, then when you are ready with old one I send a courier to pick it up.

Any questions give us a call. www.bellengineering.co.uk

We have a 63 plate Freelander2, and are getting a drone from the rear! I thought on later models they had modified the diff bearing, but maybe I am wrong! 1998 300TDi Auto Disco, never to be forgotten.

I have seen some brand new diffs (2014 on the casting) with a larger bearings, but these were purchased as replacements not from actual cars. i have seen plenty of 0f 2013 cars with diff problems, but I only get to see cars that are a minimum of 3 -4years old www.bellengineering.co.uk

... the drone is no more

Another Freelander 2 now improved with the Bell Engineering rear diff rebuild/upgrade. Thanks Austen for the removal, rebuild of my original diff and refitting together with the Haldex service. Thanks also for all those for recommending Bell Engineering.

I can second this my 10 plate XS had a new front Diff at 42k and today a rear diff at 48k done by Austen at Bell Engineering. Austen was horrified at the gunk in my Haldex too!. Low mileage is not always best.
Austen as usual did a great job at less than 50% of what Landrover were quoting. Personally though i think is a disgrace that both front a rear diffs can go in 50k
