GRC HDC Auto

Hi all,

With the possibility of snow I have started to read some of the posts on here regarding the terrain response etc.

Firstly if there is shall we say a bit of snow/ice would you drive round as normal with the snow programme selected or are all the programmes for lower speeds?

Secondly ive read about gradient something control for when using HDC uphill. The GRC holds the car like having the handbrake on if im correct.......i have an auto, doesn't an auto do this anyway on uphill.....when i take foot off the brake it doesnt move until i apply the accelerator irrelevant of the gradient?

Bit confused but im sure someone on here can put me right.

Re your first question. If the road is covered with snow/ice, by all means switch to GGS. Still take care, especially with your braking distances. (No amount of tech systems cope with the laws of physics - you have a heavy car, on ice it will take greater distance to stop) If the road becomes clear, enabling higher speeds, switch back to normal drive. Special programs are for slow/hazardous driving, ie slow speeds.

Secondly, HDC is Hill Descent Control - for going downhill under control. Yet again, this will be subject to you tyres maintaining grip. Most don't grip on ice! Your 2010 model has no "hold" or "hill start assist" for hill starts. The auto will tend to hold on a slight hill & will roll forward when on the level - as mine does.

GRC is supposed to be a feature of HDC - from the manual:

Quote:
Gradient release control (GRC)

With HDC activated, if the vehicle is stopped on
a slope of 20%(1 in 5) or more using the
footbrake, GRC will become active (except in
Terrain Response sand program). During a hill
ascent when the footbrake is released GRC will
automatically delay the brake release to allow
the driver to take up drive, and build up engine
torque. The brakes will then gradually release
to allow the vehicle to move smoothly away.
When descending a hill, a similar brake hold
and gradual release is employed to provide a
smooth transition in to HDC control.
GRC operates in forward and reverse, and
requires no driver intervention.

That said, I've never actually known it to kick in, despite trying to provoke it on a hill which should have been steep enough. GRC doesn't hold the car until you move off (it's not like Subaru's hill start assist, for example) it just releases the brakes gradually when you release the pedal.

Interesting what you say about GRC, later models equipped with "neutral functioning" operation is completely different.
It's on regardless of HDC or terrain response.
It's noticeable in everyday driving, holding on hills and even getting in and out of my garage holding the vehicle as I change from drive to reverse whilst maneuvering. MY15
