Occasional growl when engine braking

Hi team, I have occasionally heard a distinctive sound when backing off the throttle. Sort of like the Rrrrrrr sound a Scotsman makes when rolling words out of his mouth.... Smile

I called it a growl in the title but it's not as fierce as that..... so more like a loud rapid cat purr. The thing is that it's only every once in a while.... It's not a massive downshift with high revs type thing... the revs and engine feels like it's back pressure but just largely normal feeling.

So I have a loud purring Scotsman occasionally hitchhiking in the engine bay, or a sign of an oncoming fault, or a intermittent normal operational noise.

Anyone else have noisey Scottish kittens under the hood?

Edit: I should say it's a Fl2 MY13 SD4 Auto SE

Hi Walruslike,

I have a MY10 XS TD4 and I have had a similar noise since new (or at least for as long as I can remember).
I'm sure it disappeared after my front transfer box was replaced at 35k miles or so but it has come back again.
Certainly I've begun to notice it again. It seems intermittent and I'm sure it's generally when the engine is cold.
By the way, I'm not suggesting that the front transfer box is at fault. It made it's own deathly noises.
So, sorry I can't help identify it but I'm sure what you are describing is the same things I hear.

Possible engine mount problem?
they have been known to compress and allow metal to metal noises, long before they actually fail. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Hmm... I will look at them tommorow. I'm not sure I will be able to tell if they are good or not though.....

Will do some looking around the Interwebby for information on picking a faulty mount.

Thanks for your replies fellas.
