Hi everyone

I've had a high pitch whining noise coming from my engine/gearbox region for the last 5000 miles of so (about 6 weeks) and I'm struggling to find out what it is.

I held off from getting it looked at as it was booked in for a service the week before Christmas - local 4x4 garage did a standard service and thought it was either the alternator or power steering pump, but couldn't be sure until they took one off.

The noise is apparent when accelerating or holding the car in gear, especially in the lower gears when revs are generally higher. The noise is directly linked to changing gears BUT it is present when the car is in neautral and I rev it. The garage insist it is not, therefore, linked to the gearbox.

Any ideas? I have a third party warranty which I can call back on but it would be good to know if anybody has had this themselves. I have not had any warnings on the car, and it is a 2009 HST, 70,000 miles on the clock.

The accesory belt or anything driven from it such as alternator, water pump etc.

As in, replace the belt and it should stop whining? Forgive me, I'm no mechanic...

You could with the engine running spray the area. Don't go overboard though.

Down side is if you ignore it, especially if the spray idea does not clear it, it could cost big bucks if it throws off the auxiliary belt.

As you have a warranty why are you hesitating in using it ?

It won't give a in car visual warning for this sort of fault/noise the first time you get that it will be too late and it will be.  FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Thanks for the help - im taking it back to the garage in the new year as they're shut down until then. I plan on using the warranty if it's needed, especially since I drive such high mileage in the freelander. Hopefully it's nothing major but definitely need it sorting soon!

Mine gets very 'whiney' (is that how you spell it) when the gas pressure is low - initially I was convinced it was alternator, water pump etc.
Noise goes up and down with the revs - there is a comprehensive thread if you search 'Air Con'
