Can i upgrade 16" wheels to larger wheels??

Hello,

Have just joined the forum under recommendation of a friend.

I need some help as a useless female!!! Laughing (but i can drive honestly!Even have my Class 2 licence)
I have a 2008 Black Freelander 2 S model, its been brillant so far, i use it for general commuting and towing a horse trailer
But i seem to have bought the most basic model and it has 16" wheels that look ridiculous as there is so much gap in the wheel arches!
It drives fine and have no issues apart from it looks silly, I need new tyres so now is the time to decide on whether to put on new larger wheels and tyres but am confussed if i actually can???
Have been advised by a local reputable company that i can't put bigger wheels on as the Speedo will then not work correctly? Is this true??

As long as you stick to the correct ratio tyres you can go all the way up to 22" wheels (if you use the correct ratio then the spedo is unaffected) - the norm is 17", 18" and 19" which can be picked up in the for sale section here or on ebay.

Look for either Freelander 2 or Evoque as they will have the same fitting.

Welcome to the Forum and don't be afraid to ask questions! - we have all had to learn (and still are) -The short answer to your quesry about wheel changes is YES

There are loads of posts on here about wheels - a popular choice are the Range Rover Evoque alloys which are a straight fit for the FL2's and being Land Rover kit are up to the job of being on a heavy 4x4

I have a set on mine - the point about the speedo is correct ONLY if you change the rolling radius of the wheel and tyre - if you fit larger wheels generally you should reduce the height of the tyre to keep the overall size the same - hopefully the pics I have added demonstrate what I mean.

So although you are increasing the wheel size you are compensating for it with a lower profile tyre - I don't have the tyre sizes etc to hand so forgive the lack of detail - here you go

as said above

plenty of freelander or Evoque wheels and tyres for sale on here, or Ebay.

as long as you stick to FL2 or Evoque wheels they will be a direct swap and with the correct tyres fitted make no difference to anything.

you could always keep your 16'' wheels with some all terrain/mud terrain tyres on for use when going across muddy fields etc with the horsebox on. Or sell them on ebay or here to recoup some costs

All of the above is correct but you will still end up with the same gap under the wheel arch. The overall effect will be better as you will be showing more of the aluminium wheel architecture. Downside is that the larger the wheel size and thus the lower the profile of the tyre the more expensive they become.

So for 16in wheel the tyre would be 235(width of wheel)x70(depth of tyre)x16in diameter or
17in -------------"--------------------- 235 × 65 x 17in
18in --------------"---------------------- 235 x 60 x 18in
19in --------------"---------------------- 235 x 55 x 19in

Hope this all helps. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

If you check near the lock position in the frame of the drivers door you will see the correct wheel/tyre sizes listed 16" to 19" together with tyre pressures.
My car, for example, has 17" wheels fitted with winter tyres. My summer set are 19" with summer fit. See pics below:

Having had two FL2 "S" in the family I can confirm the 16" wheel problem.
My son had a couple of S specs. He reckons that the standard terrain response on the S is more than adequate for his work which involves a lot of motorway and farm work and the terrain settings on the GS are effectively cosmetic. The tyres on the S are usually on 16" wheels and tyre dealers had problems since there is not a wide selection of 4x4 tyres. He was even told that the ones fitted originally when he bought it were Transit van tyres (legacy of the Ford ownership of JLR), one tyre dealer even refused to put tyres on the 16" wheels as he couldn't find a recommendation for one on his list. so watch out for that. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Personally I have never understood the fascination with wheels,
-when you are in the car you can't see them
-when you are moving nobody else can see them
-when you are in a car park and parked next to someone nobody can see them

plus the lower the profile the more likely to get tyre/wheel damage from kerbs/potholes. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

As a Land Rover owner for the last 25 years I can tell you that's absolute rubbish. 16" rims are the most popular size on Land Rovers, from series Land Rovers and Defenders to the classic Range Rover and Discoverys. Maybe , rather than going to the likes of Kwik Fit, or other high street tyre fitters, go to proper 4x4 specialists such as John Craddock who list 43 different tyres in 235/70/16 in all tyre types too from mud terrains to snow and ice and everything in between, from budget tyre to premium brands.
Ok, so you may not be able to get to a dedicated 4x4 centre, but looking at their tyre lists on line will give you a good idea of what's available - you can then use this information to take with you to your local high street fitters who can order them in for you.
