2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Indus Silver

After reading most of the diff related posts which helped me tick off the usual suspects like tyre's & wheel bearings, l fear I may have the dreaded rear diff whine. My question is could the rear driveshafts have similar symptoms as a diff? And has anyone replaced driveshafts/bearings as a rear end whine/hum fix? My whine begins at around 30 with 50 to 60 being fairly noticeable on any road surface and won't change pitch on corners and so far hasn't got worse..

Just had the rear diff whine at 110,000 miles. Took it to Austen at Bell Engineering for reconditioned rear diff and haldex service. Nice and quiet now!

It turned out to be the propshaft bearings.. So the propshaft is off for the time being.

I haven't got a price yet, but after talking with some garages they say it's common round here to take the propshaft out, it doesn't harm the car and I seem to have gained on fuel consumption.

Horror, horror
being a new owner I'm starting to worry.
but love the car to bits.
apart from the fuel economy my 530d 2001 auto averaged 28-30 but this thing is 23-24 same driving on mainly short trips

PS just fitted a sew on leather steering wheel cover from eBay £16.50 its the nuts

My wife did 130 miles return trip over the M62 yesterday, probably doing 60 mph most of the way as it was congested (nowt new there I guess Rolling Eyes ). Got in the car for my next journey and she had averaged over 43 MPG.

Are the early models really that different ? Or is it an age thing ? FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Over the last 2000 or so miles mine has averaged 40.2mpg that's rural roads, no towns, no motorway and hardly any dual carriageway. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE

Yes and yes
Yes the early models are thirstier the early auto models much more so, and yes as you get older you drive like an old f*rt and use less fuel.

For example 2008 Auto to and from work (80 mile round trip 60 of which are on the motorway) 28-30 mpg, 2mpg less on mud tyres. Around town 22-24mpg, towing smallish (1200kg)Van if you are very lucky 23mpg, more likely 20mpg. At a constant 50mph Manchester to Birmingham and back, I did once see 40mpg, but purely on the motorway, average dropped like a stone getting to and from the motorway.
This is not a gripe, if I wanted good fuel economy I would have bought a Skoda Oktavia 1.9 diesel. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Thanks for that Andy. Seeing many other more optimistic consumption figures I thought I either had a lead boot or a duff motor. You are showing "real world" figures as I also experience. Thumbs Up 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)
