Freelander 2 2012 fuel / balance pump problem?

Hi All,

I`ve recently bought a Freelander 2 2012 for my wife as we live out in the sticks.

She absolutely loves it but she had a problem the other day I`d like to run past you all to get your advice please.

She was on a long trip to Poole and half way there, with the fuel gauge showing about 1/4 full, it conked out.

The AA man ran his diags and it said that it was showing low fuel pressure. He emptied a can of diesel and got her running again. It`s been running fine before and after that but we`ve been keeping the fuel over half full.

His comments were that the fuel tank is a saddle design and it`s possible that the fuel was empty in one half and not transferring across from the full half, hence the gauge showing half-ish full but conking out with low fuel pressure.

This all sounds feasible so we`ve been keeping it topped up.

However, I`ve been to two garages to get it looked at and done a bit of googling and getting contradictory messages. One garage says that the pump is working ok and it`s drawing 5.5 amps but a relay clicks in after a few seconds to turn it off. hey`re not sure is this is meant to happen or if the pumps faulty. They`re more on the autoelectrics side of things so checked out that stuff.

The other "mechanic" garage says that to replace the pump is a massive job, dropping the shaft to get to the pump etc which sounds expensive.

One of the other landy forums says about a balance pump.

Could any of you Landy experts point me in the right direction so I don`t end up spending a massive wedge of cash I havn`t got on something I might not need doing.

At the moment I`m driving her car around with a can in the boot to see if I can replicate what happened or see if is was a one-off blockage or something.

Do a search on here using the search function (above) for "transfer pump". The results will include a thread entitled "Fuel tank". In there a convoluted pipe is mentioned that may well be the cause of your problems. Sorry, the tank needs to come out...

The tank is a saddle design, with a transfer pump from the left side to the right side, the right side being the side that goes to the engine. There are two gauges, if the right gauge shows lower than the left, the transfer pump will briefly operate to balance the fuel levels.

There is a plug that enables you to read both fuel gauges - simple variable resistors. There have been issues with fuel gauges, with faulty connectors, and with Censored software.
My advice, lift rear seat base, remove large rubber bung to get access to top of fuel tank. remove cream coloured plug, clean and refit.
Costs nothing, takes 15 minutes, may save a lot of grief. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Australia 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Lago Grey

I've had a similar problem which went on for months. Two new senders, a new pump, new gauges, 4 little wire connectors & the 'convoluted pipe' which links the tanks. Plus a few software updates as well. The pipe was that last thing they change and that seemed to fix it. It has been working well for the past few months.

Since they need to drop the shaft to remove the tank they also disconnect the exhaust pipe. Sounds fine, just make sure they tighten the bolts up tightly! Mine came loose when I was on the beach so I dragged it along for a while filling the muffler with sand.
