Extended Warranty

Hi, has anyone extended the warranty after the dealers warranty has expired, and do you consider to be worth it

I had the cheaper version (there are two) on my last FL2 - it was 4 years old by then and it seemed a good buy. Claimed on it to replace horns and steering rack, although they wouldn't cover the water pump belt adjuster when that started screaming. I felt it was a good buy for peace of mind, and the fact that it was a LR warranty meant the dealer went the extra mile to get them to agree to the work (even though it's insurance backed and not actually LR at all, as far as I could tell).
One thing - you get a full year at a time. Mine I paid for on a monthly basis, and when I sold the car mid way through the year I still technically owed them for the rest of the year. In fact I rang them and they said as I hadn't claimed it was OK to stop paying. If you sell you can transfer the warranty to a private buyer but not to a dealer. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

. I just bought a year . Hope I don't have to use it, but it's there if needed! All the problems on the forum made me do it , even though there's a lot more without problems it seems

Decided not too but being proactive instead by changing all the drive fluids and the haldex has been out to replace filters etc in year 4. In year 5/6 coolant, battery, cam belt, water pump etc will all be done. Droping oil out before 15,000 miles as well.

May still get a big unexpected bill of course but thats my view of what is better value for money and only time will tell. In 5 years an extended warranty will cost I guess around 4K and you still need to pay for wear and tear items. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

After the two year warranty ran out I renewed mine last April £800, after my family's history with FL2s I wouldn't fell comfortable owning one without a warranty. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I extended mine last year after the 3 year manufactures warranty expired. Land Rover Warranty at £595 from memory. Just renewed again this month at £640 for another year.

I'm not an insurance person but after the Haldex was replaced in year 2 (approx £2k), for peace of mind, I went for it. Not had to use it yet but reassuring if I do. Also includes MOT fail with a £50 excess.

Not sure if I will next year.

Last week I paid £595 for the extended warranty, never had a serious problem in its 3 years but things do and can go wrong. Secondly I would normally be sitting in another new Landrover after 3 years but I can't find a suitable replacement so I now have another year to think hard on what to get, and it won't be a DS.

I am in the same boat. Just because you have had few problems recently doesn't mean that you won't get them in future, in fact the older the car the more likely you are to need a warranty. Can't decide what to get next but definitely not a DS.

Friend of mine has a Kia, it came with transferable 7 yr 100k warranty. After 6 years he has had his first problem which was a failed clutch slave cylinder. Has it serviced at his local garage and they did the warranty work too. It was sorted without question. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Just got a 2012 FL2 and am looking at warranties - what are the limits for the warranty (mileage etc) as I went onto the LR site and they said they didn't have a product that covered my FL2? so a bit confused

I presume that you didn't buy it from a LR dealer. My booklet says you can get an extended warranty up to 10 years old and less than 100k miles. If it hasn't recently had a LR service it might need an inspection. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Correct but it has been maintained by LR dealers up until the most recent. I will have another look at the JLR web site then. Thanks

Never extended my warranty, and never will.

Had my first Freelander 2 for 6 1/2 years without issue, and this one for three years and so far so good.

In total, I had the the first one without warranty for nearly 3 years and this one without warranty for a year now.

So the money I have saved by not paying for an extended warranty (which is about £2.5k) is more than enough in case of any future eventuality. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Recent issues have made me thankful for warranties - my other car is a 5.0 SC Range Rover and it's just had a slight engine issue - 4K in parts plus 3 days to fix - all covered

I think I will get the FL2 unde warrantee just in case.

You must be one of the lucky ones. I thought exactly the same before I had FL2s and never bothered with warranties. My first 10 reg FL2 was OK to 100k with no problems. Then my 2010 model cost me £2500 on repairs in under 50k miles. The my son's 60 reg had over 3K in warranty work before we moved it on at 78k miles. My 11 reg at 77k miles has cost about £2k so far under warranty. I wouldn't consider owning a Landrover now without an extended warranty and will probably change to something else next spring when it runs out. Nice car though. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

It is strange how some people have nothing but problems.

We now have 7 Freelander 2's in our circle of family and friends, and all have been faultless. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........
