First thing I'd try is a change of fluid and a new power steering reservoir - the filter is built in to the reservoir and they have a habit of clogging up.

How old is your car ? Early models 2007-10 models had an issue with quality control on steering racks. Weld spatter could work up to the reservoir and blind the filter which is an integral part. Some have been lucky, and as Steve suggested found that flushing the system though and replacing the reservoir ( which has a modified filter now ) has cured the problem. There is a very good " how to do it " if you search through the topics. If you are unlucky, like me , it's a rack, pump, reservoir , because it would be daft not to change the lot . You are looking at serious cost at a dealer for this , £1300 springs to mind.

Car is 2007 so... if I need to replace both pump and rack which I will do myself before I do it I will change the fluid again with the power steering fluid I have left from when I replaced steering pump on my td5 discovery as no further damage can be done and it's worth a try |
