Full sized spare BALD

Got my Freelander 2 last Monday. I checked most things I wanted to check but because I previously owned a FL1 I completely forgot to check the spare wheel. In the first week one of doors won't open from the fob and the steering wheel points left when driving straight. I am taking it back on Friday to get these 2 issues sorted but I am dissapointed about the spare as the advert for the car stated "immaculate" ....clearly not and so the spare is not fit for purpose. Any thoughts?

The spare is an optional, some cars don't even have one, but a tire repair kit.
Maybe the car doesn't came with a spare wheel, they put the alloy there as courtesy. Very Happy

Imo if the car is sold with a spare and sold as immaculate the tyre should be at least legal to use. Not to mention that the two front tyres were renewed at the mot before sale yet the steering is out?? should this not have been checked?? Put it this way....if I was selling a car privately and the car had a bald tyre on the spare, I would make sure the buyer knows about as it is a cost that the buyer shouldnt be paying for unless they know about it and take the extra cost into acount. They either didn't know about the spare meaning lack of detail and interest in the car they were selling or they knew full well and didn't draw my attention to it so they can use the old "should have checked the car better". bla bla....which I will not accept.

Steering might not necessarily be 'out' just because the wheel is pointing left when steering straight. You should first get the alignment checked but only after the steering has been checked for any damage (bent track rods) or wear in any of the track end joints/steering swivels and wheel bearings etc. Don't rule out any damage on the rear suspension either. If all is okay, just ask for the track to be moved across (they'll know what you mean - if they don't, go somewhere else!) Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

Right I see. Well they will be fixing it whatever needs doing. Thanks for the info. Apart from the bits that need sorting it's a fantastic car. The engine sounds great and it drives spot on. I know there is always going to something on a 6 year car. They have been helpful so far to be fair.

You can have a bald spare tyre and it will still pass an MOT! MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

Fully aware of that but I still think a provided spare should be fit for purpose and I should have been made aware of it. Would you not be hppier with a functioning spare instead of a bald weight in the boot?...I rest my case.

Of course you would! Hopefully they will replace the spare - if not there are often a few on offer on this site in the for sale section (usually cheaper than e-bay).
Worse spare I ever had was from a LR "specialist" on a Series 3. The spare was a bald tyre recut so deep the canvas was showing! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

On specing my car new I had to pay extra for a spare and jack etc. At least you have them as many won't.

Find a used casing so its usable and concentrate on getting the other faults corrected as in the big scheme of things they are more important and maybe its just a lesson learnt Whistle

Happy to pass on 4 R17 used but road legal casings later this month to members for spares when I uprate my tyres for winter but collection only near Leeds. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

And at least you have a spare. My DS has no spare and nowhere to put one! Unless you specify a space-saver when new, in which case the build is different, you don't get one with most models. And if you do have one it's a major dismantling job just to access it. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Stick a pair of knuckle savers (builders' leather gloves) in the back of the car. Worth their weight in gold when winding up the jack.

& also useful when lowering the flat wheel back into the wheel well while gripping the spokes. You don't get brake dust all over your hands. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

They say there is no such thing as a free lunch. You will have paid for it somewhere along the line. Wink

Mine came within the agreed deal along with the tow bar on my first FL2 and both items were moved to my second FL2 so did I have 2 or 4 free lunches or zero. Whistle
