Judder or vibration under braking

Hi All

I have an annoying problem that i just cannot get to the bottom of.

When braking from speed, like down a motorway slip road or slowing from anything above 40 mph, the car judders. I'd describe the judder like you if you had a warped brake disc etc. I do not feel the judder as much at lower speed braking but its there ever so slightly.

So as i thought it may be brake related I replaced the front discs and pads. That didn't make any difference. The rear discs were looking a little tired, although plenty of life left, but i decided to replace the rear discs and pads anyway. No difference. Whilst changing the rear discs i found there was a bit of play in the nearside wheel bearing. I thought maybe the play in the hub was creating a pulsation back through the pad and up to the pedal when braking so i got the wheel bearing changed. No difference, the judder is still there.

Someone said one of the wheels could be buckled or a tyre was out of shape but i thought i would feel this when driving and not just under braking. I had a spare set of wheels with 4 new matching Continental tyres so i went ahead and swapped them all over....

Im still getting the judder...

What else can i try? Would tracking cause anything like i have described? It does pull to the left ever so slightly if i take my hands off the wheel when driving, i've not tried when braking as the wheel is juddering.

HELP!!!!

I didn't think the rear shoes are used when braking. Only for the handbrake? But no i didn't replace them as they were like new and adjusted up correctly etc..

A couple of freelanders ago I had new discs and pads following an mot failure which were ok to start with I then noticed a judder developing and getting worse. I went back to the garage and they replaced the discs after which all was ok. They had apparently warped after fitting. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE

When you changed the discs & pads did you check the calipers? I had a front calliper seize (one pot only) on my previous Freelander. Gave lots of judder plus hot wheel!

Possibly not relevant but I had this once on a Transit and it turned out to be front suspension bushes. Totally different vehicle and suspension set-up but might be related? Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

I checked all calipers when I changed the discs and pads. Pistons pushed back easy enough and all hubs are equally warm to touch after a run.

The car is going for a 4 wheel laser alignment tomorrow. It does pull slightly to the left so best i get that all lined up first. It could be that the front wheels are fighting with each other under braking??

After that it will have to go up on a ramp and have a good poke around all the bushes etc.

That was my first thought. If feels exactly like a warped disk but the judder was still there on the first run with the new discs..

A disc will only run true if the flange it is bolted onto is also true. If you've got the same vibration on braking after fitting new discs, there can only be two reasons. A faulty disc or a warped flange. See my post above. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I have the same problem, judder when braking at speed which feels like it comes from the rear. Did you get to the bottom of this?

iv just fitted new discs and pads allround last week and getting the same noise/vibration under heavy braking, initially i thought it was because i had gone to grooved and drilled discs and it would settle down as they bed in but its not improving so this weekend ill be stripping them down again.
one thing ill be checking is the slide pins, i know mine are not seized because i cleaned them up and lubed them, however i have seen slide pins on other cars hydraulically lock up if too much grease is used to lube them, if both pins on the caliper lock you get poor braking if just one locks you can get all sorts of weird vibrations as it twists

The answer is to grind all edges of the pad backings slightly before fitting , it just gives the pads a helping hand in old , maybe a little corroded calipers . And of course clean pins are essential . This is a trick a lot of garages use to ensure trouble free , no comeback fitting.
