buying advice - someone help me with nailing down the price

hi forum members

I've been absent since early 2008 when i sold on my 07 freelander 2 gs and want to come back to the fold.

so I've spotted a couple of motors 1 at £15495 and the other at £16k both at main dealers both 40k on clock with the 2 year warranty n roadside etc both gs with heated leather and the new dash (well new to me compared to my old motor)

what price can i get these down to with expert haggling advice ?

i can't do with car salesmen and the backwards / forwards walking, pacing, dissapearing they do when your sat in a showroom n the hidden extras they add to the car that u don't ask for like paint guard / gap /blah blah blah

I'm just a tight northerner who works hard for my money and don't want to give much of it away?

I'm after some buying/haggling advice to get stuff chucked in or price slashed for cash if they even do that any more or anybody want to come along and beat these guys down for me Wink
I'm turning up with a bag of cash, don't need a finance or would i get a better deal /price going down that route?

any help greatly appreciated

regards

Youngie (soon to be back as a FL2 owner with your help)

You'll get a better deal if you have them on finance. You can pay the finance off the next day. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

Set aside a whole day and expect it to take that long...
Don't be afraid to walk away, you may get a phone call later (even if they don't stop you walking out) to say they've somehow managed to get you a better deal.
Don't go on a weekend, they'll have plenty of other potential customers, some of whom will be easier nuts to crack! 2009 FL2

I tend to go in about an hour before closing time.
I don't know if going in at the end the month/quarter makes any difference, since I don't expect they would admit to being miles off their sales target!
I go in with a definite view on which model/s I want and say that I am ready to put down a deposit and sign on the dotted line for the right deal "this afternoon".
I add that I could be flexible on exactly which car, if the price is right.
When pushed to name a price, I usually knock about £2000 off the asking price, for a car at £15 - 16K since their markup often seems to be about £3k but you could put in a very cheeky £12500 - 13500 bid?
If the salesperson is serious about selling the car, you can then haggle to a mutually agreeable price.
Don't forget the little extras, I got a full tank of diesel for my Defender (75 litres) plus the usual mats/flaps and got a full sized spare with better carpets for the FL2.
It also helped that when I first test-drove the 11 plate FL2 HSE I found a noise coming from the rear diff, a common (known) problem. While it was off to be fixed, I went back and expressed interest in a 12 plate FL2 XS SD Auto and got some more knocked off of that because I said I wasn't happy that the problem wouldn't recur with the HSE.
I am now driving the XS and love it.

keeping it short, i went to guy salmon today - test drove the car enjoyed it - came to the haggling bit - wouldn't budge or offer anything 16k is 16k regardless of whether I'm paying cash or pcp or hp or part exchange

we've just dropped it a thousand pound sir its a 17k car all day - yes but it hasn't sold has it hence the reason you've dropped it a grand.

i didn't even get to make a silly offer and work from there, he asked the question if he could do me a decent deal would i sign up today and came back from his walk to the office with nothing

if i was to pay cash today what can we do, what you chucking in or what can we knock off the screen price and nothing nada.

was gutted to walk away but i wasn't even offered a free keyring never mind anything decent off!!

oh well the 1 from newport is going to be making its way to stratstone doncaster within 4 to 7 days so lets see if i have better luck with them.

They have hit there quota for the quarter, winter is coming and the prices will bounce back up in the next few weeks, you're buying at the wrong time really, unless you can find a desperate salesman this week.

if you see the right car for you and it's at a fair price I wouldn't worry too much about haggling for a pound or two.

better to have the right car more than feeling you've saved a few pounds.

and I'm Scottish !!

yes, great to haggle and walk away, etc on a brand new car, I always do it.

but a second hand vehicle is a different kettle of fish.

if the right one for you comes up, you need to rethink your tactics.

Completely different experience today

Went to Stratstone Doncaster as the car from Newport had arrived for me to view.

Viewed it - took a test drive - sat down to what i thought would be the awkward bit to do the deal and the salesman was just a completely different animal compared with my experience at Guy Salmon Wakefield.

Had a choice of part ex, pcp or just doing a cash deal

I got what i needed on my part ex within 1 walk to the boss's room - brand spanking new boot liner in it already and carpet mats and had the choice of a full tank or rubber mats so went with the mats

I feel as if i won (probably didn't but i actually feel as if i did which is half the battle)

Alll for £1300 quid less than the motor at Guy Salmon

Picking it up saturday - cant wait to be back and pics will be up soon as

Many years ago I was trading in my ford escort and the guy said what price were you thinking? I said "£300" he immediately said "exactly what I was thinking" . The result was that I felt that I had been ripped off. The crazy thing is that if he had offered £290 we would both have been happier. Interesting psychology in these circumstances. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

A two or three year servicing package is worth a lot to you as a customer and costs the dealer far less to give away/throw in. Thumbs Up FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
