Flat Battery - Instrument Panel Odo Screen Flashing

I need some help please! Went out yesterday to find the battery completely flat; enough power to open the doors then that was it. Jump started it this morning and it started ok. Took it for a drive of about 10 miles, parked up and turned off. However, it doesn't seem like the system is powering down properly. When you press the stop button, on the instrument panel the odometer screen is staying on and flashing rapidly. This continues even when the doors are locked/double locked. The warning lamp under the rev counter also flashes before the alarm is armed.

I've read through many of the battery drain posts but can't find any reference to this screen staying on and flashing. If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks

Bit of an update - the main information panel, that was working, has now given up too.

Edit - and the sunroof....

Might sound obvious but perhaps the battery is knackered and not holding a charge? If you are in the AA or RAC they would come out an test it and give you a printout of charging state, cranking amps etc . Something very similar happened to us on the Porsche and the AA guy confirmed that the battery was the problem. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Thanks for your thoughts - and you're not wrong it does sound very bad. I'm not ruling out a dud battery though it's fairly new.

So, next update: whilst seeking the forums help I checked some fuses, then disconnected battery for a good couple of hours, held terminals together, then reconnected. All working ok - sunroof, instrument panel all of it. Whether it holds a charge over night is the next test, but for now it looks like it's freak-out is over. Oh one last thing: when I locked up the mirrors didn't fold in. I unlocked, folded in manually, then out again and now they work fine now on locking.

I'll let you know what happens next.

Flat Battery as well

It appears this is a common problem with Freelander 2 model. It has happened to my wife a few times, each time the car is almost a brick but jump it and it's fine. I used SDD to diagnose the problem, it first said it was the ignition relay in the rear junction box which I changed and it did it again. I ran SDD again and again it said the infotainment module needed an update so I reflashed that. Also I have made sure no third party devices such as cameras are on the infotainment power rail. Other recommendations from old posts have been to double lock every time. So fingers crossed.

So keeping fingers crossed turns out not to be a reliable technique to fix my battery drain problem. Totally flat when I went to start it yesterday lunchtime. I'm gong to put it on a charge tonight and take it from there.

Before I get someone out, I've had an idea and I'd appreciate feedback - am I just clutching at straws or is this worth trying: the day before this started I used both front and rear heated screens as me and dogs got soaked and it was steamy. I'm thinking possibly a stuck relay, so after charging battery I thought of pulling the fuses for both screens and seeing if it then holds a charge.

Worth a shot?

If your have a current meter you could put it in series with the battery and measure the quiescent current. It should slowly reduce as the various systems and internal lights go down. I seem to recall that you should get down to about 26mA. (?) 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Thanks for that idea, got to be worth I try. I'm more at home with a spanner than a meter - is the way to do this taking one battery lead off and putting the meter leads in the "gap", if you see what I mean...

Early days there was a spate of this - happen to me twice.

Your on the phone driving home, you stop outside the house and turn the engine off, eventually the wife/son/daughter gets off the phone, and you get to run into the house and empty your bladder that you had been holding for hours.

The Bluetooth in the car then searches for the phone all night = flat battery.

Fix = finish the phone call before you turn the engine off. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Always worth a try, but everything does seem to point to infotainment. When I diagnosed SDD did point to an ignition relay in the boot changed it but that didn't fix it. I have updated the firmware on the head unit so will have to wait and see.

its the old saying I use in the breakdown service industry, think simple, check earth to engine and battery, test the battery,i know its new,but you need to eliminate that or you will go round in circles, see the earth thread on this forum,
