SD4 auto gearbox type

I've been told by an independent dealer, that the Aisin autobox is basically a manual gearbox that changes automatically, like the DSG gearbox that VW use,do any members on here know if this right.Thanks.

He's talking rubbish, very briefly a DSG is a twin clutch operating two gearboxes in one unit wheras the FL2 auto has no dry clutch and a torque converter.

I think he meant robotic gearbox where there are solenoids shifting a manual gear box and this is what the FL2 has

The Aisin is not in any sense a manual gear box!

Even if you use Command Shift, the electronics will override/ignore your gear selection if it would take the box outside its intended operating parameters.

automatic Robotic grearboxs are based on manual gearboxes.
Command shift is just a program in the gearbox electronics

The Aisin box is a standard auto box, with a torque converter to interface it to the engine and internal wet clutches to engage and disengage the required ratios. It's not a robotic.

Thanks for all your replys, very helpful, its just that I'm having some problems,in that my car seems reluctant to change down causing the engine to labour usually around 1500 rpm, mentioned that I never had any problems like this with the Jatco in my freelander 1,and that's how the subject of dsg came about.

Does it change down if you depress the accelerator further?

The box "learns" your driving style, so if you suddenly change that style from "tootle along" to "press on", change-downs may appear sluggish until the box re-learns your requirements.

Otherwise it should change down if you select Sport Mode.

If I give it a good push it will, but it not the smoothest down change and it does change down if I use the sport mode ,otherwise I just put up with it till the revs rise,I,ve only had the car for a few weeks now,so I'm thinking the previous owner could have been the tootle along type,so I suggested to the dealer about restoring the box back to the factory settings and I,m awaiting there response. My local specialist said it can be done.

The dealer can reset the auto box and it will learn your driving style over the next few days, there is also a software update to cure harsh downchanges available if it suffers from this, especially from 3rd to 2nd.
