Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a Freelander 2, ideally an XS model although having seen the thread on here about installing Sat Nav's I'm tempted by other models as long as they have bluetooth. I'm wondering if I could get some advice from people who have one as their daily drive.

I'm torn with what's the better option. Is it better to aim for a lower mileage car, around 60-70,000 miles but fairly old (07-08 plates) or aim for something newer with 100,000+ on the clock?

Also, I'm going to start trawling through the topics already started but I'm trying to find out some information on what sort of things to look out for on the Freelander 2. When I've spoken to friends and family about Freelander's they've told me not to touch them with a 10 foot bargepole but when I've googled why it seems to me that the original Freelander didn't have the best reputation while there isn't a lot of information on what's so bad about the 2. Do they simply suffer from the poor reputation of their predecessor?

I've just purchased a 2012 GS ex fleet FL2 that has covered 104000 I would'nt have bought it without a full documented service history though.
I went through the same dilema as you but I got tired of viewing low mileage sheds, I think people get too hung up about mileage I really don't see it as a problem you're getting the high miler's vastly cheaper than the low mileage stuff anyway and generally there's a greater pool to choose from, let the others scrap and pay over the odds for the low mileage cars.

I prefer an older low mileage one but look at the thread about highest miles mine has only cost fifty quid in repairs in the six years I have had it.its been the best of five LR s that I have owned

It really does depend on how you are going to use the car.
low annual mileage lets say 5k, and a high mileage newer car would be OK.
High annual mileage, lets say 30k and you will need the big 150K service in less than 2 years - timing belt, aux belt and pulleys, maybe complete fluids change (brakes, gearbox, coolant, diff, haldex, transfer box), so low mileage older car, might be a cheaper option.

Bearing in mind mine has done 178k, and does 25-30k a year, I hope to be handing her over to SWMBO in a couple of years - so lets say 230k miles, then retired to 3k miles a year. My problem is I am very attached to this car, so anything that replaces her is going to have to be damn good to even get a look in. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

If it has over 100k on the clock, check it has had the cam belt done, and check for a full service history. Unfortunately low mileage does not mean it will not have a problem in the future. To keep our car A1 we have spent quite a lot of money, but at the end of the day after 5 years of ownership and a total of20k miles ( since bought second hand with 33 k on the clock ) the amortised cost of depreciation, service, and repairs still make it a fairly low cost car at around £2700 per annum including tyres. . At 7 years old it drives very nicely and we will keep it for at least another 3 years all things being equal.
