United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Zermatt Silver

Hi Tenet, no, the object of the day was a fishing lesson for my step- grandson. I went on the Eden with Geoff Johnson who had donated his services as a " Let's Tackle Cancer " auction lot. ( he lost both parents to it ,so is and ardent supporter , my Dad went the same way so I try to support LTC as much as I can on the" other " forum " .

On the Sunday evening the heavens had opened and the river was rising with colour, and it didn't really improve during the next day , so the water conditions were a bit of a killer for trout fishing. We decided to go ahead anyway and my boy caught a fish so all was well.

I've never had the time to try salmon fishing but now I've stopped working it's definitely on my to do list. Geoff shares Eden Lacey on Mondays with another guide who specialises in salmon. I don't know if you have been there before ? If not , day tickets are available through Fish Pal . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Took my son's Mitsubishi L200 in for a service and got a MItsubishi ASX as a loan car for the day. It was nice enough to drive but far too small and low to the ground to replace the FL2 and when I had a look underneath there was no sign of any back axle so this particular one was 2WD. Anyway so that one is definitely off the list. Perhaps ask for an Outlander next time. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

It's the newer B47 engine, though it still has a chain with the same layout, they ran the N47 till the facelift for the 2015 model. I have done my homework and I'm comfortable with the engine. Ran the older N47 in my previous BMW. First I've heard/read that the X3 is more susceptible, a link would be appreciated.

I wouldn't say that the "Internet is awash" with reports though I don't think that engine is bullet proof. An awful lot of high miler's without issues and it's certainly not the 1st thing folk mention on the forums (especially X3 forums) when asked what the common problems are and what to look out for.

My niece had a BMW with the same engine at the same time as my last. I was worried when her timing chain snapped after 60K+ and under 5 years until I got a lift home with her boyfriend shortly after they had the new engine fitted and he scr*w'd the nut's off it from cold. That had a full service history also Whistle Does your friend know who owned his for the 1st 18 months and how they drove?

Good fit and finish doesn't mean it won't have other issues, especially mechanical ones. Check out the Evoque forums and you will understand what I mean by "Fit and finish is in another league", rattles/squeak's, poor fitting and poor quality materials, poor outdated technology, all on a premium vehicle. The Discovery Sport is just as bad if not worse and that's meant to be a vast improvement over the Freelander. One of the reasons I didn't plump for an Evoque.

My experience with LR has not been as good as yours. Don't get me wrong it's a good vehicle and I enjoyed owning it but it still had more issues than any vehicle I have owned for the last 20 years (in fact it's had more faults than them all put together) and it's sold on with only 38K and full service history.

I don't have a link for the X3 being a particular problem. That comment was based on my colleague and my initial trawl for a used replacement engine. He was offered a used X3 engine, but his BMW specialist that he dealt with told him not to buy it as he said that the majority of camchain failures that he saw were in X3's and thought it might be related to the stresses involved in hauling the heavier body and extra drive gear.

I'm not a fan of the Evoque, so I won't be defending the interior quality there! The Evoque is no more than the booby prize loan car when the Disco's in for service Rolling Eyes it's just that I twitch a little when I see people talking about superior quality in BMW's!

Not sure I buy the explanation about cam chain failures being due to hauling a big car about. The tension on a cam chain (or belt) is the same regardless of engine load: it's driving the camshaft and not the car! 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

The engine will need to be revved harder to achieve adequate performance and is likely to be lower geared as well so, for any given mileage, the engine will have turned over that much more.

Looks like Mitsu are going to bring in the Pajero Sport to UK market again later this year - to be badged here as the Shogun Sport as before. Its basically an L200 with an SUV body and springs - extremely capable off road and just the sort of vehicle LR should be doing - priced not far north of 30K. It will sell very well methinks - to me in particular. It unfortunately looks crap but then when one is driving it one does not have to look at it. Wink

Interesting Australian video about the Mitsubishi Pajero sport. Raises interesting questions about what you might need from a car. My son's 2015 L200 is well equipped and very quiet on the road but a little bumpy due to the suspension (it can carry over a ton) and it's very good off road. When the warranty on my Fl2 runs out next spring I will certainly have a look at one of these if they come to the UK. 5 yr warranty too and cheaper servicing than LR.

There was me thinking he was actually going to drive it.

We've replaced the Mrs FL2 with a Kuga. It's actually quite freelander like in quite a few ways, but guess given that they used to own LR?

Is it better? Mmmmm, I suppose new versus 7 year old, yes. Would I have a new Kuga over a new FL2? Nope!

And I'd never attempt Strata in it either! lol

Shame LR have just moved bigger and fancier and costlier without letup. Maybe the Defender replacement might be a bit simpler and affordable.

Hardly likely the Defender replacement will be " affordable" . JLR have just had record sales of 4x4 vehicles. On the back of that is a drop in Operating Profit after huge investments in capital investment. The Freelander 2 base models only got " affordable" in real terms later on in its life when the investment costs were sunk and the car sales were flagging as the design was dated. They need to shift more volume of high margin vehicles and the best way to do that is to sell " luxury" where the higher specifications gain a bigger percentage profit Pound for pound than the every day vanilla flavour.

The Defender never was a low cost vehicle. The last one I bought new in 1997 ( County 90 ) was over £21,000 on the road , and the vehicles that any replacement will be competing with in the market are the ones that killed the Defender sales, Isuzu, Toyota, Ford, Mitsubishi, 4x4 pickups. Most of those are in the mid 20 Thousands to early Thirty Thousand plus VAT, so I'd imagine anything LandRover introduce will be priced well up there, as that is what the market commands.

I think LR have been very clever in changing their customer profile over the last 10 years. Their only problem is that one day the general public's love with SUVs will change. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

In case anyone is interested. One of my sons spent the last week or so in Kenya visiting family in Nairobi and a number of farms in the Rift Valley. He didn't see a single LandRover of any kind in town or on the farms. Only Japanese stuff. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Current thinking is Evoque too small, Disco DS does not excite enough to be spending an extra £25k - So buy a new Fiat 124 Spider & keep the Freelie ! Lateral thinking or what FL2 Ex D2, D3, RRS, etc. now all gone.

Dissapointing imo, just loks like a jacked up estate car from any marque from the VAG group.

Certainly couldn't live with that big 'cheesy grin' Mr. Green front end! FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.
