Having not yet given up the idea of getting a new Land Rover I have been offered and accepted one of the half day Land Rover Experiences in early December albeit in a Discovery HSE. I understand it's on and off road but wonder if anyone has done it and can give there own experiences and how much it might influence me to chose a Discovery over an Freelander.

did a LRE in a D3 HSE, last month

Thought very highly of the D3 afterwards, bar the water and the rock crawl area the FL2 could have gone everywhere it did.

I liked the driving position of the D3 and it doesn't feel as big as it looks, depends on what your looking for

4x4 with car like handling and economy or 4x4 with off higher Road tax, less MPG and loads of luggage space

I would look at a D3 if the option came along, you can pick a fully loaded year old low miles D3 HSE for less than £29k not good for a £45k car  Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I aim to retire in less than 6 months and go from 2 to 1 cars and move to the Lake District. My head is saying Freelander but my heart says Discovery. As you say prices are in freefall and I know I can get a 2008 on a 08 plate HSE for the same as a new FL2 HSE

I've had a good drive of the Freelander and it's suprisingly good am hoping the experience day will make my mind up for me

Dont know how much off roading experience you have jojim but you will be blown away be Disco 3s capability off the tarmac. Its pretty smokey on it too, miles better than its predecessor. F/l2s pretty good off road, far better than most peoples requirement, where it will go most people would not dare to proceed.
What you get with F/L2 is a less complex vehicle which brings a smile to most drivers faces on and off road together with lower cost of ownership. I am achieving 40 mpg out of my manual diesel
What you get with Disco 3 is (wash my mouth out) probably better off road capability than Defender, fantastic on road experience and at best 27mpg from a TDV6. The auto box is sublime.

I spent a lot of the 80's driving a V8 90 around London not to mention a few years in Range Rovers on motorways but other than courses going seriously offroad was frowned upon. It's not that I want to climb mountains in it just in case I have to and do it in comfort and safely. I'm willing to take the hit on fuel consumption within reason.

I have friends with an older generation discovery and rolls so much it makes me feel sick that's why the freelander was so nice....it drove like a big high car.

Trouble is I'm a sucker for auto and like you I have heard good things about it.

Say hello from us if you see Mark Stopp's the Centre Manager, and get him to take you straight to 'Technical Hill'!

You'll be impressed by the Disco.

I did the LRE Chilterns location in a Freelander 2. The FL2 is massively impressive off-road (as well as on-road) and will far exceed your expectations. The FL2 will do all you need. There is nothing on that course it couldn't do!
